Support your local knife dealer. They can't match internet prices but then again you can't fondle e-knives. Today, Chesapeake Knife and Tool in Waldorf MD let me fondle:

Sam Cox custom hunters and fighters. Absolutely beautiful. Not too outrageous for good custom work, $350-$500 range.

A bunch of Benchmade Axis locks. Fun to open, fun to close.

Emerson can't-remember-what with the wave opener. Yep, it's as fast as they say. How fast does it open? Well, how fast can you pull it out of your pocket?

Benchmade Pinnacle - didn't like it. Didn't like the sebbie style lock. Do I get kicked off the forums for not liking sebbie locks

And the highest on my fun factor list was ...

Kershaw Ken Onion "spring assisted opening" knives. Whoa! Push the blade open about 30 degrees and WHACK! the spring kicks in and does the rest. Boring liner lock more than compensated for by the spring assisted opening. Way fun.

And the money keeps flying away ...

Chesapeake Knife and Tool has some very interesting stuff there. Went to one in a nearby mall for the first time in several years and wished I hadn't left my credit card at home. Didn't have much time to fondle anything nor did I ask since I didn't want to bother the workers and make myself really wish that I had brought my credit card. I do wish that I had played with the Speed Safe display knife they had on the counter though. They had some very interesting Spydercos which had their handles redone beautifully . . . One of the smaller clip-its (navigator, pegasus, copilot, one of the small ones) had a scuplted metal handle. Not sure what the design was, but it was breathtaking . . . You can find some nice stuff at store fronts that you won't find at internet dealers.

Hollywood?! You mean there's another St. Mary's Countian on here?

Cheseapeake Knife and Tool is fine for fondling, but they get really prickly when it comes to price. If you want to pay 40% higher for the same knife then by all means, go ahead. I got my BM 710 online for like 100$. Same knife at CKT for 140$. not worth it in my opinion. So I go fondle things at that store, say "I'm making up my mind", then go online. if they can't be competitive, screw 'em.

I have negotiated with local merchants to get their prices lower to make the pain of paying too much go away. If we don't support the mom & pop's, we're all going to be buying from one big multi-national Wal-Mart soon..... And once the monopoly is established, then we'll see how the prices rise....
