some knives from Bulgaria

I picked these up during my week in Bulgaria (with a trip to Greece, we were denied entry to Turkey). I couldn't find much but we had a blast. Great trip.

All but the top and the bottom knives were made by Andrey Stoyanev. The top I found in a gift shop. The Case is the knife I brought with me. For 15 leva, I'm dubious that he made the slipjoints but I will just choose to believe he did. What do you call that blade shape, a cotton sampler?

Cool.

I lived in Bulgaria for 2 years back from 1996-1998.

I did not bring any knives home, and really wish I had.

What were you doing over in Bulgaria?

I would love to go back for a visit, but not sure I can ever convince my wife to go with me.

My best friend moved there with his family, his wife is Bulgarian. I took the wife and three kids, we had a great time. I'll post some pictures this evening. I love the country and can't wait to go back. Greek beer is terrible but the Bulgarian beer is really good.

These single blade grafting knives aren’t the most complicated slipjoint patterns to make, nor are the materials very expensive. I doubt that the steel is expensive, and the wooden handle scales appear to be beech, an abundant wood in Bulgaria. Add the brass pins, a basic heat treat and you have a very inexpensive knife. That is why I truly believe he must have made these slipjoints.

There is a historical reason why beer quality is good in the Bulgaria:

We had an 8 plus 1 van to fit both families. Apparently we were missing some document or other. The Bulgarian border guards said the Turkish guards were turning away a lot of people that day.

The slipjoints are actually pretty cool but stainless apparently after cutting three apples.
