Some knives I've been looking at...

You should probably get an Apogee from Darrel Ralph

the BM 551 is nice as long as you dont pay MSRP

Hi. Let me give you a little help.

1. Boot knife - 420 j2 steel is a very poor choice. I have a dive knife made of this stuff and it will not take an edge at all. This is because it has a very small amount of carbon. This is not a good knife in any sense.

2. Glock - The site dosn't list the steel so, assume that it's probably not too good. A Kabar is kind of similiar to this knife but actually has good steel. I wouldn't get this knife.

3. BM 551 - 440-C is a good steel with a decent amount of carbon. I think it has 1.2% carbon which is good. The BM also has the Axis lock so it will defiently be secure. This is the knife to go with of the ones you listed. A much better knife in all respects.

For any other questions, just ask. Here is some steel info you might want to read:

Welcome to the forums! I'm not familiar with the first two knives but the BM axis locks are great knives. Lockup is always solid and secure. Quality of their grinds often varies however, and many forumites often complain that they are not very sharp out of the box.

Some other great knives to look at might be Microtech LCC, AL MAR SERE 2000 and custom makers like Tom ANderson, Darrel Ralph, Tom Mayo.

Keep looking around here and you will find out more about knives than you ever dreamed!:)

Welcome aboard apogee159. If you do a little looking around this forum before you buy, you will make a better choice than not. Of the three knives you mentioned, the BM is the best one.

Welcome aboard man. Any BM knife with an axis lock is a great choice, but I'd reconsider the rigid boot knife. Cold steel makes a couple good boot daggers, the peacekeeper 1 and 2, and offers them in a high carbon steel they call Carbon V. These are good knives. They will take a much better edge. Check out SOGs boot knives as well.
