I've seen those sharpening blocks before on other forums. I think a popular name for it is "Hoodoo hone," after the man who popularized the design. I think that he is also a university professor like you Howard.
 
I'm no university prof. The closest I've come to that is teaching lab sections of the freshman physics course as a poverty striken grad student.
