Some new gear

(I posted this over at bushcraftUSA but wanted to share it here too)

I've been trying to find a new system for bushcraft/backpacking. In the past I've typically only carried a large fixed blade and a mid size folder. I wanted to go with a more versatile loadout that provides more options so I decided on the following new gear;

SAK Huntsman
Bahco Laplander
Wetterlings Swedish Forest Axe
Fallkniven F1 (I had an ESEE 4 in this slot but the knife wasn't a good fit for me. Anyone else know what I mean by that? Sometimes a knife can be great but for some reason, just doesn't "feel" right.)

I think it will be worth carrying the extra weight. It's been snowing like crazy here and I can't wait to get outside and put these new tools to work!

I will get reviews up after I've tested and used everything.

All great stuff, I think you have any and all bases covered there  Still want to get myself a laplander saw, I really like those.

That's a killer set up right there I have the same axe and it can take an incredible edge and hold it forever.

I know what you mean. I have a Stead knife from Koyote and it's an awesome knife, it just doesn't feel right. I even sent it back to have him re-shape the scales but it still doesn't feel right. May end up selling it.

As to your setup; if you can't do it with what you have there...you can't do it.:D

Sweet set up. I know exactly what you mean on the Esse 4 vs F1. That's why I have no esse 3/4 anymore and own about 4 F1's....
Personally I'm still debating between an axe and a larger blade for wood processing. I'll probably end up with both.

Anyways, looks like you got all the bases covered with quality tools (like TK mentioned).
Let us know how the set up works out for you out there.

Nice backwoods tool selection there.
Great minds think alike I say!
My kit:
gransfors bruks sfa
CS master hunter san mai
leatherman blast
bacho laplander
pocket chainsaw (goinggear)

You can pretty much do anything with that set up. Mine is evolving to something similar...

  • GB Wildlife Hatchet
  • Bark River STS-3
  • Victorinox Swisstool
  • Silky Folding Saw

I also usually bring a back up saw blade and a sharpening stone for longer trips.

I'd love to get a SFA from GB also for the longer duration trips. At some point I'll start figuring out how to get my hands on a Fiddleback Bushfinger, but for now this set up is good to go.

I had an RC4 and while clearly a well built and capable knife- ergonomically it wasn't right for me, the F1 is a perfect match

I wasn't overly excited about the Fallkniven sheath though, Martin Swinkle fixed that little problem :)

my saw and axe (hatchet really) choices were on the cheaper end- Gerber/Fiskars for both, but thus far I have no complaints and the price (and weight) are right

i havent had a problem with any of the esee knives but been there done that with whole not the knife for me thing lol. if you want i can help you find a good home for you to donate that rc-4 to. ;) (we wouldnt want it to feel left out)
