Some new ideas for HI

I recently provided HI with some models for their consideration.

1. A 6" Randall #1 I got at the shop in Orlando in the early 90s. I explained that the blade could also be made in 7,8, and 9" lengths, without widening or thickening the blade. I also provided the picture from the Randall website showing the different stages in the formation of their knives. A picture is worth a thousand words with the kamis, and a model is even better. I also showed them the use (per Keating's methods) of the knife so they would understand the utility of some of its features.

2. A Blackjack trailguide from the early 90's Illinois production.

3. A Grohman #1 (?) knock-off called (I think) Yukon Hunter.

4. We also talked about straight razors, and I showed them my Dovo.

It will be most interesting to see what inspiration they draw from these designs. Stay tuned ...

Howard, are you saying you went to Bir Gorkha in Nepal? If so, major props, I'd love to go someday.

Very interested in seeing HI's interpretation of the Grohman Canadian.

I have a few sketches to throw in... I gotta dig up my graph paper and upload em. I'd love an HI ULU, and have a sweet survival knife drawn up-real simple, utilitarian...

I'd be all for a Himalayan straight razor...and I don't even shave;)

I like to see them work on knives that have the aesthetic of their own tradition. In line with that, the karambit worked out real well, and heavy choppers do also. I would think a billhook and an ulu would be naturals for them.

I guess I'm in the minority but I would be happy if they continued to make Kurkris and other traditional weapons instead of making western or hybrid knives...I guess I'm old fashion but I come to HI for kurkris, to me that's kind of the point

a copy of a copy? no thanks. even a copy of the original? i don't think it's fair or ethical to make copies of existing patterns. period. full stop.

making a copy of an extinct pattern? perhaps with a twist/improvements? sure. check out the Bonecutter for an example :)

it would make me very sad to see any brand-name copycat practices occur.

there are companies now that make a pretty good living doing this, without licensing/etc and i don't buy their products anymore. outright exact molded clones even.

the Grohmann knives in particular, are pretty much THE Canadian knife, and are in current production. bad karma to make copies.

just sayin'

now, a Himalayan Nessmuk? goto town!

i'm EXTREMELY happy with the unique variety HI produces. keep it up!

I am not sure there are any original *non-fantasy* knives anymore.

I'd love to see a Khyber Knife, a Katar, a Gladius and a sword with a leaf shaped blade; like this, but with a different handle and guard...

Quite possibly, the leaf shaped blade is the great-grandfather of the khukuri. First, ancient Celts and Hellenes enlarged the forward portion of the blade for weight and then dropped the forward portion downward for increased chopping power. Carried by Alexander's troops deep into Asia, the pattern ended up in India, and then Nepal.

HI has made a few katar. I bet someone has a pic they can dig up.... I've been hoping for awhile that the kamis would get a wild hair and make a pata.

how about a hi billhook?, i think that would be a awesome thing:)

Billhook would indeed be very cool.

Sadly, I think that a functional straight razor might be a bit of a stretch for the kamis. Razor making is an art in itself. Different steel, different grinds, precision is important. But if they could make an oversized villager razor I'd probably get one just for the novelty.

I'd like to see more Farmer knives made. I still haven't got one. :(

I would be down for a Bill Hook, these are even something they would be familiar with as they are all over the area.

I have a few nice ones I use around the house now, very useful little blades.
