I really like the work that's been done to this 500. I'm showing it with a factory version of the same knife for comparison. The only real difference is that the factory one has 1278/2000 etched on the back of the blade, the engraved one has no number. They both have a block letter tang stamp with 500 and a dot.

Hi Dave,

I saw that or one just like on ebay this week. The one I saw had the engrave's name etched on the back tang area of the knife, it almost looked like the back of the blade had been sanded to a matt finish (that could just have been the photo). Dave can you post a good close up photo of the back blades?
thanks jb4570

Here you go John. I bought the one you saw I'm sure. The back side of the blade has a mirror finish just like the front side and the back side of the factory knife but no serial number. If he polished that off, there's no sign of it. The first picture is the back side of the factory knife.

Thanks for the info Dave. That knife is very cool!

There were 3 different version/issues of the 500 Duke "Ducks in Flight" issued in 1984.
1) No dog in etch, 1000 knives in issue.
2) Large dog in etch, 2000 knives in issue.
3) Small dog in etch, 2500 knives in issue.

Dave, your knife has the large dog. But, no engraved numbers on the back, plus the engraved bolsters, nice score. You should contact the seller for any info on this knife, if that is a dead end, contact the engraver and see what his records can tell you.

VERY nice 500's. I like the engraving very much. Nice layout and the punch dot backround looks good with it.

I've been planning to engrave one of my 500's but haven't gotten around to it.

I did a search and found out that the engaver, Mr. Sherwood passed away some years ago. I did find pictures of other knives he engraved and a book he wrote about engraving. He did a lot of guns also.

Thanks. I like nicely done engraving.

I hadn't heard of Mr. Sherwood previously so I did a search too. He was a popular engraver from the era of traditional hammer and chisel engraving. I like his style very much as the design on your knife reminds me of L.D. Nimschke's style. Nimschke was one of the most prolific engravers whose work is highly prized and sought after. George Sherwood was known for great work as well from what I found.

Here's a link to one thing I found in case you didn't see it.

So far I haven't found anywhere that says when he passed away. I'll try asking the seller of the knife if he had it done or if he knows anymore about it.

I did see that link to the GRS website. I was AMAZED in reading that he could engrave 4 bolsters in 30 minutes. That is astounding to me. He obviously was a "master" at his craft.

I didn't see it stated WHEN he died. Only that he did. One link had some work from 2003, so it was some time after that.

CONGRATS on your acquisition!

And he did it for $50! Amazing.

I'm glad that I got it, especially after reading about him. At first I thought I'd maybe paid too much for it, but I'm not so sure now. Anyway, a knife is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it and I was willing to pay enough to get it. ;)

That IS amazing, and yielded him his best hourly wage!

I would be happy to own that knife too. There is not another just like it, and there won't be!

After reading all this info that knife seems all the more beautiful... That man had a gift and the things he left his touch on are an enduring legacy to his art:thumbup:

Yes, I'm proud to own it now. I sent the seller a message asking for any info that he had on the knife but haven't heard back.

The seller responded that the knife came to them as is and they have no other info on it except the card that was sent with it. Since the engraver is no longer with us, I guess I'm at a dead end.
