Some of the finest damascus I've seen...

Those of you who attended ECCKS will remember having seen some of the European makers there. D.F. Kressler, Francesco Pachi, Roger Bergh, Jonny Walker Nillson, Conny Persson, and others. Each of these makers showed great skill and passion for their work. I was impressed with each and every one.

When I got to Conny Persson's table (after drooling over an axe Roger Bergh had with him), I was a bit saddened to see he only had one blade left - an amazing mosaic damascus bowie with a price tag well above my budget. I admired it for some time and got to chat with Conny (a very amiable fellow I should add), and was informed that several of the knives he'd brought with him had been purchased by some custom knife purveyor. Sadly, I left Conny's table with only a business card.

Well, last Thursday I hopped over to KnifeArt.com and found out who had purchased Conny's knives: Larry Connelly. Anyway, to make a long story even longer, I picked up the phone, and placed an order.

The knife arrived the next day! So, without further ado, here's a picture from this afternoon's photo-shoot with my new prize, which I can proudly boast is some of the finest damascus I've ever seen.

OK, one more for ya...

I hope you enjoy these. And Larry, if you're reading this, thanks for a great transaction.

One more close-up pic and some details can be seen by following the link in my signature. Yeah, I know I'm a shameless, rotten show-off, but I just can't help myself sometimes. This knife is just too nice not to show off.

Wolf,
Congratulations that damascus (the whole knive) is flat out amazing!

I've been drooling over Connie's work for a while now. Congrats!

Your tastes match mine... so they must be excellent!

Roger Bergh's overall "compositions" really blow me away. I jaw-dropped on a Bergh piece a while back, and bought a Bergh piece from Larry myself...some of the finest walrus I've ever seen, and a composite "firecracker" blade that was outstanding, not to mention the really neat, customized sheath.

Your new knife is a real gem. Super wood (what is that?), and that is really nifty damascus...looks like the Spyderco logo or a crab in the mix. Very cool. Enjoy!

Thanks for the kind words guys. By the way, Bergh and Persson have done at least one collaboration in the past. The picture is still up on the BladeGallery website as the "Ivory Hunter" under Bergh's name (I saw the same pic in a recent knife magazine but I forgot which one).

These two makers, along with Johan Gustafsson, Kaj Embretsen, and perhaps some others I haven't heard of yet represent a growing population of Swedish makers that really know how to forge damascus!

-JW,
The pattern on the edge is a "firecracker" pattern, while the rest of the blade and the guard are an "accordion" pattern.

Damn Wulf, is that ever gorgeous! Great blade/handle combination. The best thing about beautiful wood is that it only gets better the more you polish it. Which by the looks of that knife, will be quite often. Be careful though, people start to give you strange looks when you tell them for the third time in a week, "no, sorry I can't make it, have to stay home and polish the wood again tonite".

Now, the question is will what I have for the first time attempted, work?

On the assumption that it does, one can see how a photograph can fool the buying public.

No implication being made. Just the difficulty one has when purchasing via a photo. Fortunately, the purchaser was aware of the look of the knife because he had seen the makers work at a show.

What is the real color of the blade and the handle of this knife? Is the knife like either photo? which photo is a more accurate rendering of the knife? Only one who has seen it personally can really know.

Yes, and yes

- lighting plays a big role.

Indeed, when viewing just a digital rendition of a knife, one misses out on a lot. It's always nice to know first hand how the knife feels in the hand, how it looks in a different light, what the edge is like, etc., but most anyone who sells high dollar, one-of-a-kind products will be happy to answer any questions over the phone or via e-mail to provide a more accurate description.

When I called Mr. Connelly, he pulled the knife out of its pouch and answered each and every one of my nit-picky questions in great detail. In just a few minutes I knew enough about the knife to feel confident that I would be happy with the purchase.
