Well, I talked to Yangdu this am and again she brought up the 'concept' of higher prices.
We've seen this coming. Everything is higher. She's paying Duties she doesn't think she should be but does not have time to fight it. Half the Kamis are sick with Monsoon season. HI takes care of their hospital bills and families.

So, expect higher prices. She's been blowing Swords out at cost, and Mike, that Neem Handled Tarwar that had my name written on it? Well, it still belongs to you, and what a deal.

Some slimebucket stole a credit card and ordered a blade. The package came back unclaimed, so with this small gesture from the universe Yangdu felt better- you know, Karma, God looking after good works. The theft seemed to bother Yangdu more than the loss actually represented in real terms, but we know how that is.

My wife is making noise she wants to move to Wyoming. I don't know but that the munk compound days are numbered, and that's a real shame.

(if any of you are rich and want a great deal on a wild part of Montana the Yups haven't overun yet, let me know.....)

Yangdu is considering having a inventory reduction sale soon to get cash flow up to manage loose ends.

That's about all I can think of. Oh, I know- Keith has resumed pooping in the toilet, God Bless him.

Huhzah! for Keith:D

Hey, prices go up. I had to raise prices myself at my shop. If it means that the kamis can eat, get medicine, and have a better life...hey, who am I to complain paying a few bucks more for something that is worth 5 times what the sticker says:)
I'm sorry to hear about the munk compound:( where are we to go when the zombies rise?

Sooner or later, inflation takes its toll. I don't think that it's unreasonable for Yangdu to raise prices. A business has to make a profit.

And you should see it with 16 coats of Tru-Oil on it! What a beauty!

1. Every morning before work: sand with superfine steel wool, apply Tru-Oil with fingers. Stick hands in sand afterwords to help get that stuff off.

2. Come home from work: sand with superfine steel wool, apply Tru-Oil with fingers. Stick hands in sand afterwords to help get that stuff off.

3. Repeat for many consecutive days.

Looks awesome (IMHHO) :D Would photograph it, but the card reader is acting up. Eventually.

That one was a bargain, I admit. But I'll call you first if I sell it. I AM doing my part to help the kamis, though; the falcata last month was, I think, the most $$$ HI I've ever seen. Proud to have jumped on THAT grenade to save other forumites :foot: :D from pecuniary strangulation.

Mike

Hold onto it, it has a good home. I'll be getting one some day.

munk

Not a problem. I already have my falcata and HI sword set. As long as they don't introduce new knives I'm ok.

Uh-oh, "introduce new knives", I'm so screwed.;)

Higher prices, generally: Not good
Paying higher prices for HI blades to ensure that HI and Yangdu are able to continue operation and take care of the Kamis and their families: Good
Poop in toilet: Good

What Munk should have said is that HI is raising their prices back up. I first found HI back in '98 when their prices were higher than they are today. Uncle Bill and Yangdu lowered their prices when Shop 2 and later BirGorkha opened. Basically HI has had a sale on their khukuris for the past several years. I don't begrudge Yangdu raising prices; HI khukuris will still be an incredible deal.

Yep. Still one hack of a deal !

Thanks for the news, Munk.

I've been wondering how Yangdu was making ends meet with some of the low prices.

Good wishes to Yangdu and HI in finding the best pricing for the health of the business.

Thanks for the update Munk. HI blades are such a value that I can't imagine this being taken badly.

No objections from me. Yangdu's been selling DOTDs at such low prices that this was bound to happen.

Bob

I really believe the pricing we have been getting has been very humble indeed. I see no problem what-so-ever in Yangdu offsetting rising expenses.

Since I first came to Bladeforums, we've had several blowups with the Maoists, a couple of natural disasters, and severely increased fuel prices. Hell, my landlady has jacked up the rent on me twice since then, and that's only to cover the additional property taxes...never mind the profit margin.

Amazingly, we're still paying pretty much what we paid for HI products in 2004.

I'd consider a price hike fair at this point. Tack another $10 or $20 on everything and we're still practically stealing it.

Let's see...

hand forged blade,
zone heat treated,
hand engraving,
hand cut scrimshaw,
hand carved,
hand stitched sheaths,...

I don't know what the market will bear, but just ask me for a hand engraving quote sometime!;)

Just on that alone, you would realize what an incredible deal these knives are.

I can't imagine what it would cost to commission a knife like a 15" AK from a bladesmith, from the ground up, in the USA. Could you even get the authentic teapot quench?

You couldn't get me to engrave the design and inlay the brass wire on a sirupati for what Yangdu sells the whole knife for.

Just some perspective...

take care,

Tom

Just checked the old 1998 HI price list: BAS - $150, 15" AK - $175, and compared it with the current HI Shopping site: BAS - $100, 15" AK - $125. If gasoline prices had followed the trend of HI prices, Hummers would be flying off the car lots and hybrids would be gathering dust!

If Yangdu says it needs doing then I'm sure it does. Do what you need to do--we'll still be here:)

I am doing OK, but my commuting expenses have doubled over the past year, and I drive 22,000 miles a year - on a light driving year.

Some people may be hurting right now, and higher prices could price them out of the market.

No one expects people to sell at a loss, but it can be hard to tell what the market can bear.
