I am a blade junkie. Just like many of you here, I know the difference between quality and junk. I don't have any problem paying for things that are a cut above. However some people really make me want to smack 'em sometimes. For example, I have been carrying/using/poking things with my 1st Emerson Journeyman for a few months now and I just love this knife. I got it at Blade show and paid around $200 for it. That is a lot of money to me but a justifiable investment on a tool that I will have and use for many years. I was at my friends house recently and he needed a knife (doesn't carry one) and I waved open my Journeyman for him to use. He immediately said "That is awesome, what is that, where did you get it?" I showed it to him and he was very impressed with it's feel, looks, wave and all things that make and Emerson great. Then he said "how much?" I told him and he instantly closed it and handed it back to me with a scowl and said "you are an idiot, you can get a knife for $20 at walmart". I wanted to flipping punch him. My son will have this Emerson 1 day an his son after that probably. I buy once cry once. Keep on buying those $20 walmart folders you ignorant prick.

Point out something he has spent a considerable amount of money on, car, house, toys etc and then told him how much less he could have spent for something that does essentially the same thing. This usually works for me. What he said about your knife can be said about most anything anyone owns.

If I were you, I would go buy another Emerson!
Everyone should have a 7 anyways.

Being new to Emerson's I understand the mentality. To me, it's a tool that has to used frequently to be truly appreciated. It's like using a Craftsman wrench vs a Snap On wrench.

Well, he certainly reacted like a jerk, but I'll admit that if I looked at knives purely as tools I would somewhat agree with his sentiment, though not his delivery. For me, personally, a knife is a tool, but also a worry stone, security blanket, piece of an emergency plan. Ideally, it's also an object in which artistic vision, utilitarian design and technical inovation can come together. A knife is my own quiet way of saying, "I am prepared. " even when I'm not, really.

Usually once I go on that rant people stop trying to tell me how to spend my money.

What kind of car does he drive? He can always downgrade to a Moped lol!

Well said.

You can get a knife at Walmart, but you'll have to go back in a few months to get another after it falls apart. Excluding Kershaws.

Everybody needs a 7 as was previously mentioned. Iconic design. And tell your friend I just spent $475 on a Strider SnG and would do it again in a heartbeat. It's not idiocy to enjoy knives as the art that they are and carry them with pride of ownership.

Right there. ^
Don't even THINK about explaining a chisel grind to this guy.

People don't get it.

People really don't what a value Emerson knives are.

I told my buddy how much an Emerson was and he had a reaction similar to the op's buddy. I didn't have the time to explain it....and was glad I wasn't carrying my strider pt, sebenza or xm18 that day

I just don't tell people what I paid for my knives. If they're not into knives they won't understand so theres no point in explaining. If someone is actually interested enough i'll explain what makes the knife more expensive. My favorite is when people who go out every weekend and drop $100 on a night out drinking ask me why I would waste my money like that...I've really grown to hate most human beings.

Not to offend the smokers out there (I used to be one), but nowadays it amazes me that folks will shell out up to $5 a pack for their smokes. Over a years time, that's enough for a real nice knife. And take it from someone who knows, throat cancer isn't as much fun as it sounds. I wouldn't wish that on anybody. Well, maybe a couple people. :)
Sorry - off my pulpit now.

Joe

I no longer tell sheeple what my knives cost. Since I own a couple of William Henry's, they would die of shock. I simply reply, "I paid what it is worth."

I figure that most of them will criticize you no matter what you tell them, so why give them ammunition.

Im sure my "friend" would never appreciate the quality of, well anything. He is strictly utility.
