Some photos from around a watering hole in an area I like to go walking through now and then.

A few tadpoles there, but only a few.

More coyote tracks. Looks like it was running out of the grasses and at something at the watering hole, maybe a turkey.

Great pictures. I am not familiar with the animals you may have arround there so I have no idea what made those prints. But anyhow it seems like you had a great time. What brand/model of knife are you using for reference in the pictures?

Wow, what a tracking bonanza!

Hi Mikel, thanks for pointing out that I forgot to add in the descriptions, I went back and added those in. The knife is a MK22 made by Martin Knives. It is just over 9in / 23cm overall, and has a 4.5in / 11.5cm blade.

Wow, looks like it's just as easy in the mud in that area as it is the snow in our area. The mud here always collapses on itself on larger animals. You can tell, usually, but not as easily.

Yep, the red clay down here is really good for tracking. I need to take the little one and let her do some plaster molds over the summer.

Useful plants indeed! Looks like Lambs ear aka Confederate toilet paper.

Yep, and some young polk salad, Queen Anne's lace, thistle, and a few others.

They are superb photographs mistwalker. Thanks for posting them. The turkey shot is awesome.

I've found that thistle sometimes give a good opportunity for photographs.

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed them. Yes, we have a lot more turkey here now than when I was a kid.

Yep, I have noticed that too, and always look for it in the late afternoon and evenings when it is hot out :)

Man that looks like a great place to spot wildlife and tracks!

Yep, one of the great things about living in a temperate rain forest is the constantly changing record of the wildlife written in the mud :)

I haven't noticed thistle up here in Central Kentucky but right now Queen Anne's lace is really splendid

No red clay, either.

I watched a goldfinch feast on thistle feed one day. He really had a time.

Gorgeous pics as always. Your Coyote tracks reminded me of an experiment. I was going to grab road killed yotes and practice skinning them. The idea went south when I realized that they are visibly crawling with fleas from here to hell and back. A guy that used to kill them for fur told me to toss the dog in a bag and blast it with Raid, seal it up and let it sit. It kills the fleas. So I might go for it this fall\winter if I find some that aren't too banged up.

Thank you. Yeah, I don't like skinning animals or processing meat in the warmer months due to all of the fleas and flies. I can only manage to deal with that when I am very hungry, or know I soon will be.

I've only done rabbits, deer, fish, never one of these guys. Maybe road kill is a good thing as I will likely make a mess out of them for a bit. I actually have the warden semi talked into going up to the north again. We'll see. I crave the forest and could learn a TON from the natives. Now I am ready to learn. I was never foaming at the mouth to learn (indigenous) bushcraft, but I definately have an interest. If we go again I will not waste the opportunity.
