This post is all pictures from the Sea Pines Forest Preserve in Hilton Head Island.
So there is a big main trail that runs through the preserve, but it was for car use, so we got a lot of ground covered via Jeep.
Next up we took one of the foot trails, to an "Indian Shell Circle". What was really interesting is that at first glance what looks like gravel and rock is nothing but seashells. The massive accumulation of them has made the soil have a higher than normal calcium content, which allows plants to grow inland that normally would not in this area.
Next we got a picture of a butterfly, and then a lizard the boy caught and let ride around on his hat and in his hand for awhile. I think we named him Geoff. Not Jeff, cause that isn't fancy enough.
We made it to the Heron Rookery, where you could see an island pretty much used only by the birds. They were pretty interesting to watch, but I didn't manage to get any pictures cause they kept ducking down under the water.
BK14! RECOGNIZE!
Here are a couple of mushrooms I found whilst we were walking through the place.
Back in the Jeep!
I didn't get as many pics as I would have liked here. It was a really odd place. Like the island of misfit canoes. There were tons of them just laying around.
Back to the Jeep for the ride out! We stopped to watch a bunch of people on horseback making their way through one of the trails. There were at least 20 of them.
More pics coming in the next post of the beach and some other stuff.
