I did this early last fall before deer season came in. I was tired of the plain, old, ugly gray of the composite stock on my Remington 710 .270.
So, I did a little research on what others were doing to their rifle stocks and what paint to use. I got some pictures of different camo patterns, studied them and set out cutting my own stencils from frisket. And this is what I ended up with, beginning to end:
Lightly sanded and scuffed with green scotchbrite, wiped down with acetone:
First a base coat of khaki/tan:
Next, a layer of large and small tree branch shapes:
Next, I took a piece of sponge torn off and dipped it in some light grey to dab on the branches for treebark:
Now, I start layering on the leaf stencils with green and brown. I cut a seperate stencil to use as the leaf veins with different colors:
