Some pictures of my 'New' shop...

I thought folks here might like to see some changes I've been making in my work space. Over this past summer I've been working on moving my finishing area to a new location away from all the grinding dust and moving my hot shop. I've also been working on a light studio for my photography.. that I'm trying to take more seriously.

Here is my new finishing area. It's located in a spare room above my garage and has a beautiful south facing view of the oak barrens. The south light creates beautiful and natural lighting conditions that will be enhanced by strobes and light diffusers. I built a 'jeweler's bench' for hand finishing, a leather working table and a small area for practicing my katakiri engraving. I'm hoping the new space will aid me into getting into a new mind-set for my finishing work.View attachment 393182

Here is me playing around with my light studio.. using some of my favorite 'shop things' as props. I'm still learning this set-up and still have a lot to learn with post processing...

Here is a fun picture I took of my new hot shop. I'm still working on details here.. so I haven't took a lot of pictures. But you can see my new power hammer and the nice setting.

Still a work in progress.

Anyway.. just thought I'd share!

I'm jealous! My entire "shop" is a 6' x 10' area sectioned off inside a shed.

I am jealous too. Vey good looking shop. Just renovate a small barn?

Thanks guys. We really lucked out on this property.

My hot/grinding shop is in a small horse barn. It has rubber mats over sand (I live in sand country). I rearranged the tongue and groove planks that made up the horse stalls into two spaces. I haven't photographed the grinding area as I'm still working on that...

Flat surfaces seem to fill up with stuff soon after cleaning. Or is that just me (and most knifemakers I know)

Looks great Scott! :)

Great photos as well!

Oh and Re Gary's post--- My Dad always said, "We can't have flat surfaces because something will always get piled on top of them." ;) :)

Duh. :o I've been paranoid about how I poured my power hammer foundation and I thought you might be talking about that! Not sure how long that will last.. but so far so good.

Oh yes... Horizontal surfaces are like magnets. But I designed this so that the only place I really need a flat surface to work on is my leather and layout table. That will be a challenge. But the rest of the spaces are just meant to hold the tools. All work will be held with vices, etc.

Very nice, Scott. It shows that you put a lot of thought into the layout. :)Were it not for the Anyang hammer (and the shiny joist hangers) your hot shop looks like it just stepped out of a nineteenth century blacksmith shop. A hot shop should look like a working shop which this one certainly does.

Are you going to use one of the horse stalls for your grinding?

Gary

Looks like a real inspiring place to work!
