I’ve shown these over at the swamp some time ago as the guys were using a Ratweiler. But I thought some here might like to see them as well.
The first three depict the chasse, the catch and the last is the pig being stuck. The guys are friends of mine and regularly go out pig catching as a sport and to sell the carcasses to the chillers out west, ultimately for import to Europe as wild boar meat is much in demand overseas.

I hope you enjoy them

Man, that is very cool. I like the armor on the dogs... I've been involved in stitching up a dog that didn't have it. It was as if she had been opened up by a razor blade.

Thanks for sharing the pics!

nice pics ian!

I'd love to hunt with those dogs sometime. Are they catch and bay dogs?

I’ve stitched a few up in my time as well. :D
In the old days we use to have wide collars with a copper lining sandwiched in between two layers of leather, they protected the throat but not around the chest area.
As dogs hold onto the ear it still allows the boar to rake around the shoulder area of the dog, these new outfits save many nasty cuts as they cover around the shoulders.
There are a number of places in OZ where you can buy pig dog supplies as pig catching is very popular here.

Here’s one of them.

BTW, A large boar with huge tusks IMOP is less dangerous with dogs than a young 3 parts grown boar that is more agile and has smaller razor sharp tusks.

What kind of dog mixes are you useing. Do your hounds catch or do you use a catch dog after the hounds bay. Here is a pic of my dog when he was about two catching a small hog

Most of those dogs are just fast holders.
They have a Kelpie for a bailer and barker, very much like mine here.

Some are good finders and called ute/truck dogs. They won’t go in and hold but certainly let you know where they are. :D
When mine is chasing a Wallaby or a Roo, I can still hear her a half mile away. :D
Old Stan is more like a D10 Dozer he’s good for a 2 hundred yard dash, :D not that I let him go in on a pig. Though once he caught one out the back of my place here, about a 150 pound sow, It didn’t have a chance once he grabbed it, and I doubt he would have caught it without the Kelpie bailing it up for him. :D
Cheers,
Ian.

i knew the pics before but it´s great to see them again, ian

That’a a great pic of your boy there.

Most of the pig dog mixes in OZ these days are Great Dane, Wolf Hound, Stag Hound crosses for endurance and speed. Always there is a holder breed in there as well. Bullmastiff, Pit Bull and I’ve seen a few around with the American Bulldog X as well.

Back in the early days the favorite breed was a cross Bull Terrier and Australian Cattle Dog, they were a great X as well.

There are some bred here for catching wild cattle, they need to hold onto the snout of the beast, a horseman rides in and tails the bull. That is grabbing the tail and pushing the bull or turning until it topples.
You carry a bull strap to subdue it until you can cut the horns off and castrate it. Then get the hell out of there before he works out who done it. :D

Thanks Ian he is a dogo Argentino and I use him for everything from hogs to pheasants and of course he will catch a hog. He has even found some bow shot deer we had trouble recovering

I have read about the dogo Argentino but never seen one here in Australia.

There was a fella breading the Ban Dogs in western NSW, not sure if he is still doing it though. They have been tightening the laws here in OZ with some dog breeds. Like everything else it’s easier to legislate than go after the irresponsible dog owners.

Stan has had two visits from the police regarding frightening patrons at my wife’s plant nursery.

After hours he has the full five acres to roam around, but during business hours we have to keep him away from the public.
Even though they are at fault for coming into his yard from the nursery that is separate from his yard.

Here is his new abode during business hours. :D Though he is obsessed with my truck and couldn’t think of anywhere better to spend his day. :D

He did catch a young nineteen you old male stealing plants early one morning, he had a bit of skin off him and most of his clothes torn off him. The police weren’t interested in that one though. :D

Our nearest neighbors are over a mile away to the north and about a half mile to the south, so were fairly isolated here.

The police are of no help being understaffed and a fair distance from where we live so Stan is a necessity as far as I’m concerned.
