Santa's bringing a PS4 and needs some game recommendations. Single player or 2-person, suitable for nine-year-old kid, disc-based that won't require network connection or subscription service.

First-person shooter that's not too graphically violent? Race cars?

And for the Dad, how about a Western and a Horror/zombie game?

Alriiiiiight! Good choice! I can't speak much to games for 9 year olds but I highly recommend "the last of us" for a zombie game, along with "dying light". They're both terrific!

I recommend black ops 3 for yourself other than that I'm not sure what to get for a 9 yr old.

Thanks for the Dad-appropriate recommendations.

As far as the boy, his (our) favorite game is StarWars Battlefront II on the PS2. The new PS4 system comes with the new Battlefront game, but what else would be similar? Anything similar, but different?
The boy likes the old Call of Duty games. Are there any WWII / Army games for the PS4 that aren't too graphic or foul-mouthed?

The trend in first person shooter style games has been to up the realism and violence, my thought is that there are very few kid games in that category, but you have to decide for your kid I guess.

The lego games are worth a look. Minecraft is my number one recommendation though. Far more creative than most games, building rather than just following a path, mowing down enemies. I don't know what Sony needs right now for an internet connection, hopefully someone else knows.

Batman Arkham Knight for sure..... Fucking awesome game.

And for you, I suggest The Last of Us. Literally the best game I've ever played, hands down. It came out on PS3 but there is a remastered PS4 version with better graphics and at 60fps. It's such an amazing game, it's like the best zombie apocalypse game and movie combined. The story is phenomenal, the acting is phenomenal, the whole damn thing is. It's too graphic and mature for a 9 year old, but you'll love it. Also, Fallot 4 just came out and that game is great too, I'm playing through it now.

You could get Halo. Really fun and the old M rated games weren't very graphic and there was no language/sex/drugs. Halo 5 is T for teen. Lost Planet is kinda old but it was fun. Never played but Portal or Destiny might work

EDIT: Nevermind. I just realized you're getting a PS4 and 50% of the games I named were Xbox only so.... If he already has a shooting game, Madden or 2K is always fun

AFAIK the meat of the new Battlefront is it's online multiplayer, so without a PS+ subscription you're going to be missing out on some content, as well as options for other games. Destiny is a really really good FPS, it's even been said it has the best shooter mechanics ever, (also not too foul mouthed, worst word I've heard was a B word and that was only once) but it's all online so it's going to require PS+ to play any of it.

I might have spent an hour or 120 playing new Vegas lol I'd have to trade in my ps3 and get a 4 just for the new fallout and have been hesitating.
 Careful though, game can be a life ruiner. I know some people with a ridiculous amount of time spent.

Fallout 4 prompted me to upgrading to the Xbox One. Totally worth it. Rainbow Six Siege helped move that decision along too.

OP, I prefer shooters but sports games are fun to play solo or with a friend. FIFA and baseball games are really the only ones I play. I've heard The Show on Playstation is pretty much the best baseball game you can play. Hockey games are also pretty fun.

I've got a good 40 hours into fallout 4 so far. Awesome game. Way better on PC though, it's just a PC preferred game in my opinion. If my PC couldn't run it I would definitely get it on ps4 though of course. The settlement building aspect is really cool, I have an insane settlement built in Sanctuary.

'Ridiculous' only comes into it when we are talking about multiplayer games on a professional level. And even then it is only in older games with active competitive scenes where it has even been possible for people to put in the years, not hours, required to qualify for the ridiculous title. ;)

I don't know OP, I only play older multiplayer PC games with competetive scenes. ;)

But yes. Get fallout for yourself and some racing/ platform jumping type games for the kid. Nothing multiplayer, competetive, or open ended for the kid unless you want him to become an addict. FEZ looks mildly interesting.

I used to play d2 ALOT on and off for years lol I have d3 for ps3 and it's good but not legendary like diablo 2 lord of destruction. Jeesh I sound like a nerd haha
