some questions about Brass Black

I have some knives with brass guards that I would like to blacken, but the knives cannot be dissasembled. I plan on diluting Brass Black into water in a 1:5 ratio, and brushing it onto the brass in thin layers, buffing before I apply each new layer. I need to know if Brass Black can harm steel, wood, stone etc..., as I don't see how I can avoid some run off.

Thanks!

Just mask off the blade and use it full strength. Brass black is kind of a pain, as it seems to adhere in a splotchy fashion. I use q-tips to apply it and use a fresh one for each dip in the chemical. Seems to help with problem areas by using a new applicator on areas that seem to resist coloring. It looks great if it's applied at to not completely cover with an even finish. Almost like a color case hardening effect.

Post a pic of it if you can when you finish. I'd like to see what it looks like. I love the look of case hardened steel.

Kinda hard to see the effect , but here's a pic.

Clean/wipe with muriatic acid before adding the BB - this will help prevent the splotchys
let dry completely between coats - and buff with a clean dry cloth ONLY

Thanks for all the answers, guys. I'll try to mask off the blade, but in case there is any spillage, does anyone know what effect brass black would have on the steel?

It will color it and if left too long will etch it like any other etchant type finish. Wipe off immediately and sand back if need be, but best is to mask off.
