Well while I was on vacation to visit my parents down in Dallas my father and I hit up a local Spyderco dealer in town. Naturally I couldn't leave without picking one up and the Caly 3.5 is the one I left with.

Now I did have a couple questions as this is my first Seki made Spyderco.

The opening was not smooth at all in fact it was very rough and bumpy, I did oil up the pivot which has helped that a good bit.

The blade is about 1/3 off center (it doesn't rub the liners) which wont keep me from using the knife but from what I have read most of the knives coming out of Seki are pretty much perfect F&F. I don't have any torx drivers with me down here but when I get home do you guys think I might be able to fix this by adjusting the pivot screw?

Most of the Seki made knives I have seen pictures of say Seki City on the blade mine just says Japan on one side and Spyderco VG10 on the other is this normal for the Caly 3.5?

Thanks very much for your help.

The maker of the Caly series is not the same maker as the "Seki City" stamped knives. Whole different maker. The Caly 3 series doesn't use washers at all. You may noticed the blade and the liners are a very tight fit. The pinned construction doesn't allow for much leeway in the adjustment department. I've seen a couple with off centered blades, but not many. The rough opening can be remedied by washing the knife in warm water with Dawn detergent. Use canned air to clean out the excess water and oil as desired. Most knives have a bit of a gritty feeling. They aren't assembled nor made in sterile clean rooms. Debris can and will make it's way into the pivots and such.

Oh ok I had no idea Spyderco had two Japanese makers, thanks for clearing that up. Overall I defiantly love the knife it feels amazing in the hand.

I will give it a really good washing and then re oil it and see how that works. Like I said the off center blade isn't the end of the world to me as long as its not touching the liners I am happy.

I ended up buying 2 of the Caly 3.5 ZDP knives. I kept the best of the two and ended up selling the other.one thing to note is that the blade grinds are usually always perfect on the knives stamped with just "Japan" on them.

That is true, the grind lines on this VG10 Caly 3.5 are 100% perfectly even.

Overall the knife is fantastic.

Well after a good cleaning with Dawn and a fresh oil job this Caly is just as smooth as any other Spyderco I have ever owned including those with washers.
I am pretty sure I have found a new edc for a long time I really like everything this Caly brings to the table.
