Hey all,

I had never heard of para-cord before I came here. I have a few questions.

1. Is it actually Parachute cord?
2. How much weight will it hold?
3. Where is a good place to buy it?
4. Is it expensive?

I did a search and didn't find anything on these things. I did find that a lot of people use para-cord :)

Thanks,

Thanks Voodoo....

However :) That link brings up a site with a menu on the left. Nothing else. No matter what I click on nothing shows up from the menu. Internet Explorer and Firefox do the same thing.

Anyone else? :)

Holy crap. Is that correct that item W9779 will hold 900 pounds? Is that like real weight?

So I could suspend a car engine on one piece of this line with no problems?

I had no idea they could make rope so strong. That blows me away. That is the stuff.

usually the strength rating is done by pulling the line straight on. if you actually put any knot on the line this reduces the strength by quite a considerable amount.

nasa has some kevlar line that is 1/4 inch at 25,000 lbs breaking strength

it is used on new parachute systems that can support 60,000lbs

Outdoor stores like Eastern Mountain Sports, Army Surplus or Gander Mountain usually carry it, and it's dirt cheap, less than $8 for a couple hundred feet. We use it a lot in the Army for tying down stuff and repairing equipment. It's good to have around.

I read somewhere that true paracord has 7 strands inside of the 'sheath' , each strand capable of 50lbs test , the sheath capable of 150lb test.
This is why it comes so much in handy , in a 25 ft hunk you have 8 possible strands of cordage , each of them strong enough for most camp chores/survival scenarios. Enjoy

if you want something lighter and thinner although I've not tried this myself.

4) http://search.cheaperthandirt.com/s...test&getfields=price&getfields=image&filter=p
cheapest prices, OK customer service, 2 colors only, largest quantities I've seen regularly available, but YMMV.
