Some questions about Sharpmaker

Hello everyone!

I am planing to buy finally a Spyderco Sharpmaker. I love traditional knives and some of my favourite traditional knives are made from D2 steel. Now I have Lansky crocksticks that have served me well but it doesn't cut anymore. The round sticks are pain when sharping the tip. So I'll get Sharpmaker soon.

Before I do I have questions that I think I should know:

Since I want to sharp D2 steel should I invest almost as much for diamond rods than sharpmaker costs or can I do well without diamond rods for it?

I understood about product description you get Medium and Fine grit sticks with it, should I invest ultra-fines. They don't cost that much more?

How long would generally a sharmaker's cermic stick last? Think you won't drop and break it accidently? I think years but am I closely correct?

And what comes from DVD, I probably can't watch it due DVD is most likely Region and Europe is Region 2 just for the records.

If money isn't a concern, i would get the ultra fine for another degree of refinement. If I'm not mistaken, the fine and ultra fine should last forever, whereas the medium will gradually wear down. I have thrown the rods, carelessly, in my tool bag and broken or chipped the medium stones as a result of tools banging on them in the tool bin of the truck, but I've also dropped them and they aren't THAT fragile. Like I said, my carelessness on that one. My only experience with D2 on my sharpmaker involved a co-worker's D2 grip. It actually sharpened pretty fast with just medium and fine stones- alot faster than the cpm S30V on my military.

ETA: Upon further research, it seems that the DVD is region free (1-8), although there was some talk about it being automatically set to the north american region after being played four times on a computer's optical drive. That's only what I read and I can't comment on the veracity of that, but it makes sense.

just put the DVD in your computer, it wont care about regions! :)

Thanks everyone! This helps me greatly! Now I am just looking forward when I can buy sharpmaker. Probably sometimes next month. Prior christmas anyway. This is good. This is indeed good news. Thank you again.

Hi,

Here's an older post I made about using the Sharpmaker.

I have the diamond rods but I found that sandpaper wrapped rods cut quicker. And the UF is very nice if you're going for a very sharp and polished edge. If you don't plan on stropping your knives, then the UF rods can do almost as a good of a job.

That's very true. Sharpmaker rods are borderline useless and cut about 15times slower than I want it to. There's no doubt other sharpening methods will sharpen your knife faster, but then it's a different design and concept too.

If you're serious about removing metal and get the edges sharp quicker, Spyderco has Diamond stones and you'll like them
