some questions about trail hawk mods

I just got my first CS Trail Hawk, and I'd like to know a little more about modding it before I started trying to.

1. The set pin looks like an allen head. Anyone know what size it is?
2. How do I strip away the original coating on the head? Do I just use any regular paint remover?
3. Is there any particular type of paint that I should use? Do I need to use primer?
4. Should I put the set pin back if I'm not planning to throw this?
5. Anything else I should know?

Thanks a lot.

i think it needs a 2.5 mm allen wrench. i do remember its metric. read the sticky about cs mods http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=483042. i took most of my ideas from there. little here and a little there and voila my own custom. the head i just sanded with emory cloth sandpaer til i got the effect i was looking for. sort of an antiqued look. i then cleaned it and painted it with clear krylon. read other posts about modding the traihawk. there is hundreds of em'

1-no clue. 1/8 maybe.
2.Sandbladt/beadblast is easiest, and best. Any paint remove will work, but not very good.
3.Most of us are using wood stain. As for a paint, I would guess something for outdoor use.
4. Really does not matter. If it hits on the handle just a few times, you are going to either knock the handle out, or split the wood.
5. Read the sticky at the top of the page, it covers everyting.

I have modded two of the Viking CS axe's.

The set screws on mine are Torx , not Hex - buy yourself the cheapie Husky Torx set , it includes that size and most other common sizes , no need to spend a lot on that , if indeed the screw pin on yours is the same as on mine.

The paint on both of my axe heads was nothing like has been mentioned here , I was able to scrape most of mine off with a small knife, the remainder coarse steel wool.

I did not paint mine , I blued them instead and love how they turned out , no time for a pic now though.

You should most definatly put the set screw back in , it was there for a reason. :)

Thanks for all the replies

It seems that I can get the set pin out with a flat head screw driver with no stripping or camming.

I'm still a little lost on head paint, as I don't really know much about painting. I saw some mentions of Rustoleum in the other Trail Hawk mod threads. Do I just spraypaint that onto the head?

yes.... after a light sanding and cleaning with a solvent... or just leave it stock black.... no paint is going to hold up if your gonna use it camping. the coat of paint it comes with is probably better than spraypaint. steve from coal creek forge told me about bees wax. i guess before spraypaint and hi tech coatings, to prevent rust people used beeswax rubbed on a warm axe head.

yeah, i love it out there. the whole range of weather, clear skies, and isolation.

I used a wire brush wheel in a drill to remove the finish then used browning solution on it to give it an old looking finish.
