In my limited knowledge, there are a few versions of Buck M9 bayonets :-
1. Early military version (1987-1989), there are markings on ONE side of the blade (near the handguard) :
M9 PHROBIS III U.S.A. PAT. PENDING
2. Later commerical version (1991), there are markings on BOTH sides of the blade (near the handguard) :
M9 PHROBIS III U.S.A. & BUCK 188 U.S.A.
However, one of my friends had recently obtained a 'military issued' Buck M9 bayonet. It is the 'All Black' version, including its sheath. It has both the military (M9 PHROBIS III U.S.A. PAT. PENDING) and commerical (BUCK 188 U.S.A.) markings on both sides of its blade ! It also has the dolphin trademark of Phrobis on its handguard and sheath. '^' mark on the blade indicated Buck made it in 1988.
I suspect the above-mentioned bayonet is not genuine military issued because :-
1. According to the data I have obtained, there is no 'All Black' version of early military issued models, except 350 pieces which were stamped 'USMC'.
2. I have never seen another M9 with both the military and commerical markings on both sides of its blade.
3. There is a label cautioning 'fingers cutting' on its sheath. Such label should only appears on Buck's 1991 commerical version.
I would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me whether my friend had obtained an 'extremely rare' sample or just a forgery of military issued M9 bayonets.
Any comment is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
