Some Questions on M9 Bayonets

In my limited knowledge, there are a few versions of Buck M9 bayonets :-

1. Early military version (1987-1989), there are markings on ONE side of the blade (near the handguard) :

M9 PHROBIS III U.S.A. PAT. PENDING

2. Later commerical version (1991), there are markings on BOTH sides of the blade (near the handguard) :

M9 PHROBIS III U.S.A. & BUCK 188 U.S.A.

However, one of my friends had recently obtained a 'military issued' Buck M9 bayonet. It is the 'All Black' version, including its sheath. It has both the military (M9 PHROBIS III U.S.A. PAT. PENDING) and commerical (BUCK 188 U.S.A.) markings on both sides of its blade ! It also has the dolphin trademark of Phrobis on its handguard and sheath. '^' mark on the blade indicated Buck made it in 1988.

I suspect the above-mentioned bayonet is not genuine military issued because :-

1. According to the data I have obtained, there is no 'All Black' version of early military issued models, except 350 pieces which were stamped 'USMC'.

2. I have never seen another M9 with both the military and commerical markings on both sides of its blade.

3. There is a label cautioning 'fingers cutting' on its sheath. Such label should only appears on Buck's 1991 commerical version.

I would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me whether my friend had obtained an 'extremely rare' sample or just a forgery of military issued M9 bayonets.

Any comment is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I also want to know about it......! because I also found some of them selling in Hong Kong & Mainland China! anyone can help?

It looks like you know more about the M9 than I.

But, I find it interesting that the knives are in China, and two people have seen them. I think that rules out mostly a super rare Military version and leads more toward a new knock-off. What is the cost?

Expensive....! Retail price about $400 to $500-USD
I am very confuse about that! anyone can help me to clear ?

To LnyxForces:

Hello ! I am in H.K too, would you mind to tell me where did you found this knid of M9 Bayonet, Supreme Co....?

I don't believe there was any black military issue version. Buck sold a black commerical version of the knife designed by Phrobis with Phrobis III stamp on one side, Buck stamp on the other. I think it was between 1987 and 1991 before the Buck commercial versions had only the Buck stamp.

It sounds like you have the 1988 Buck Commerical version but you may want to check with some collectors.

I would like to thank you guys for your information. I have a much clear view now.

It seems that my friend had got a 'commerical version' of M9 bayonet instead of 'genuine issue' as he claimed.

To Dan Cheung :

My friend actually lives in Mainland China. I do not know where and how much did he got his M9, though I am very sure it would not be cheap ! I will ask my friend where he got his piece and will let you know as soon as possible.

I also notice that besides Supreme Co., you can also find M9s available in military and toy guns shops along Dundas Street and Kwong Wah Street. I find a lot of M9s (mostly made by Lanclay) available at 'Big Soldier' - they 'only' sold for around US$200.00, but I am very sure that they will cost much across the border (I mean the ones which are imported, not those manufactered by Norinco).
