I haven’t had time to do a lot other than work lately, but I’m usually in the woods with a camera anyway so I thought I’d share some random photos from recent outings.

I found a bit of Hornets nest laying on the ground by a fallen tree that had been down since some bad storms some time back. Hornets nest makes great tinder when it’s dry, one spark and it was going and this little bit burned for about a minute.

Just be aware and pay attention to which bits you grab. Just because the tree has fallen and parts of the nest have been scattered over a forty meter area does not mean the hornets gave up and left.

There is two hornets nests within about 30 yards of my house. One about 30 feet up or so, the other maybe 40. My nephew keeps telling me I need to get rid of them because he doesn't want them to invade my house.

And thanks for no spiders :D

Hornets are something we seem to have a lot of in this area, but they have never bothered me. I've never bothered them either though, I just observe and photograph them.

Great shots Mist. That phasmid is cool!

Thanks Ken, I thought so too. I stopped seeing many of those for quite a while, then lately I am seeing more of them around. When I lived in Florida there were a lot of them much larger than this one.

Great shots! Say, what kind of camera/lens were you using?

Thanks, it's a Nikon DSLR with an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm.

great pics Brian... thanks for sharing..

Thanks Mike, glad you liked them

Was the hornets nest easy to take a spark? Nice pictures.

Jeff

Thanks. It was extremely easy, but we haven't had any rain, at least none to speak of...just light showers here and there...in weeks. Just one sparking and it started burning.

How do you find the Trail Mate?

I like it, it will figure prominently in the next series of random photos. It's not quite as "pointy" as I prefer in a small knife, but it is stainless, stout, and light which are things I need in a neck knife and I can modify the point later if I need to. I just need to finish testing it out to see which is really more important to me personally in a neck knife... stout or pointy. Stout is great for gouging and prying or rough or extreme use in fire lighting in wet conditions, and pointy is nice for making improvised water filters, removing splinters, cleaning debris out of wounds, and finer wood working.

Cool pics, I bet a paper wasp nest would take a spark.

Oh I bet it will too, I believe hornets are wasps technically. I just run across a whole lot more of these kinds of hornet's nests in the woods than I do the standard wasps nests.

Absolutely beautiful pics. Thank you so much for taking the time to document your trip.
I find these posts very inspirational.
