After figuring out how to do this,I would like to show you folks some of my work. These are some pieces I made that were purchased by a collector right after Thanksgiving. I don't do strictly period work, but it is my favorite style, and of course you can see the influence Dan Winkler and Karen Shook have on my work. What do you think?

I think they are fantastic as I'm very interested in period pieces. Especially like the sheaths. I see both a Karen Shook and Chuck Burrows influence there.

Thanks guys.Your right Kevin,I am also influenced by both Chuck and Karen in my leatherwork.I've never met either of these great artists personally, but I have spoke with Chuck on the phone a few time and he gave me much help in getting started working with rawhide, which is not the easiest material to work with. I've also talked with Daniel a couple of times, and he too, has been most helpful in getting my work to the point it is at today. As far as Karen, I have'nt had the pleasure of meeting or speaking with her yet, but I have looked closely at every picture of her work that I could find,as well as looking a a couple of pieces in person,so I am as equally grateful to her as well.I consider all three of these fine people to be the absolute best at this style of work, and I always feel honored when people compare my work to theirs! Your right as well Keith. I've been into knifemaking for 10 years now, but have only started going public with it a year or so ago,and I am still very new at the photography side of things, but I am going to keep working on those skills as well! Thanks again to all, and I will keep posting new pictures when I finish something. Now that I know how to post pictures here, I look forward to becoming more active!

John your work just keeps getting better and better with every new knife I see. That leather work is outstanding and I understand how much work is involved.

John,WOW !!!!!
Sorry I just ran up on this thread or I would have posted sooner...These are to awesome....We gotta talk about the rawhide work....Your turn to teach.

Bruce

John those are really nice, can you tell me what the wrap is on the handles. Also can you list the materials involved?

I am not sure why more knife makers do not have a image-shack/photo-bucket its free hosting and you can post very large or just the right size photos. These forum boards are all about the pictures people want to see it, taste it, and smell it.

Thumbnail pictures are like the 8 track tapes, please if you need help let me know and I can get you to the resources you need.

Good free photo editing software, this stuff is easy to manage, editing is a breeze and most importantly the sizing/export features are very easy, thats a big bonus.

Imageshack by kodak is a good photo hosting site, I have been using it for some time and have had minimal problems with photots going down, I think I have something like 700 pictures saved and they have not asked for a dime. Its a bit tricky at first, but after you get it done once and continue to use it over time you will find its your friend for lots of things.

With the internet being the number one selling tool, lots of makers are selling themselves short by not promoting there knives with the best pictures and methods to host those pictures IMHO. By all means I am not saying this is the way to do it but it works darn well for me.

If you or anyone else for that matter need any help or anyone for that matter, just give me a call and I would help you out my number is on my website.

Great looking work. Love the styles from that era.

Just noticed that this thread was back from the dead. Bruce, I'll be happy to teach you what I know about the rawhide work, and would consider it pretty cool to be able to teach you something. Spence, the wraps on the handles are simply rawhide lace and a patterned copper ferule that is made from thin copper sheet. I really do need some help on the picture side of things, although I must admit that those are pictures that Wilkes took the day he came to the shop.If this does'nt answer your quetions, please feel free to give me a call. Bruce, you give me a call too, it's been a while since we spoke. Thanks to all that posted, and I will be posting pictures of recent work very soon!!
