The steel is Takefu VG10 core Sam mai. The outer skin is comprised of 15 layers of stainless and nickel. Once the blade is ground and heat treated I take it to a mirror finish and then etch in warm ferric chloride. The acid etch darkens the core and highlights the outer layers. They may look like grooves but in reality the topography is very slight.
