Well i should have gone there earlier but that was my first time and i didnt know any better. People were standing in line at 3am. Alot of the good stuff was gone in the first 25min. They would let a group of people in for 20min to buy what they want and then the next group. I were in the third group and boy some people left with great stuff. Managed some cool Under Armor shirts a jacket and poles. Camelpak mule for $20 with a bad blader. Another cool find was the pot from an MSR Reactor stove. The stove was gone and the pot had no price on it. They let me have it for $10. I thought it would work great with my Svea123. Boy were i right about that . It fit right in but with lots or extra room on the sides. So i would need to figure out what to carry in there so it wont bounce about when walking.

It fits on the stove like it was made for it.

I boiled about 1.2L in 5min. Which is saving about one and a half min with a regular pot. The water was boiling so hard that it kicked the lid off the pot. The fines do add more weight to the pot but with less time to boil maybe i could save on fuel weight. Looking in the pot i noticed that the water was boiling from the bottom and less so from the sides, still the fines on the side did make a diffrence.

Nicely done!

I'm too lazy to hit REI that early but I'm glad you got some good stuff.

Dave im going to show up at 3am next time lol... There was some real nice stuff that was picked clean in the first 20min. One guy left with SIX pair of trekking poles. Filters and everything else..I were in the third group and by then 80% of the good stuff was gone already..

I guess that I have so much gear that for me personally, there wouldn't be that great of a benefit to standing in line that long. Unless, of course, there were some friendly backpacker gals hanging out.:D That's about the only reason I'd be waiting that long.

But I'm glad that it is a great opportunity for folks who have not previously accumulated the warehouse of stuff I already have.

Score Sasha! I haven't hit up one of REI's used gear sale, might drop by one of these days . I hear that's the time to get tents and sleeping bags....

I went to my gear sale today as well. I found a pair of NEW Merrell hiking shoes for 25 dollars (normally 80), a REI Halo down bag (+20) for my buddy, new, for 60 (normally 180) and a few other goodies.

I have flat STOLE some others stuff at these garage sales - I love them.

I got to mine at 6am and was part of the first batch they let in.

I think the difference in Los Smogeles is that those 3am folks were still up from Friday night!

Ray thanks on the miso soup, Glad you liked it.
Rksoon. They did have lots and lots of tents. But i want an ultra light and when i got some extra money im going to get the Tarptent Rainbow. They had one tent on sale that i just picked up at 70% off. Reason returned, Customer said tent missing parts as he couldnt set it up. On the bottom of the tag. "Cashier comment, Customer missing brain cells" Almost took that tent just cause of that tag lol...
Dave you got lots of stuff....Lets talk about your knives lol.... Im looking for particular things only where i can lower the pack weight for the trips.

Yes, I have gone way overboard on the blades---especially the "safe queens"! They have gone up in value quite a bit but it's a false gain because I don't expect I'll ever sell them. Hopefully my heirs will take out the "users" and get good money for the collectibles.

When I look for new gear it can be comfort oriented if it's for 4WD or canoe/raft camping. However, for backpacking it needs to be an improvement on my existing equipment AND lighter. For summer camping at modest elevations, I'm thinking about trying a Bearthedog style quilt. My Marmot Helium 15 degree bag weighs a very respectable 1 lb 13 oz. but Reuben's rig would shave about a pound off that. I may be carrying too warm of a bag for some trips; especially when I carry that 12 oz. Western Mountaineering Flight Jacket that provides good upper body insulation.

In addition to lighter gear, I am also looking to simply leave some items behind and save their entire weight. That was one objective during my recent week-long "SAK Trekker only" backpack. Damn near killed me to leave all those blades in my safe!

I might have to hit one of these up sometime. Sounds like some good stuff could be had.

Yeah, I was at the REI garage sale today as well. Probably around 200 people in line when it opened at 10. I was able to score this stuff

REI Quarter Dome UL 3lbs 11oz. (rainfly is sorta sticky) $50

REI UL60 3lbs 2oz. (has a small tear) $25

Happy with that stuff. I won't be able to use it much, but at least now I have a relatively lightweight setup for backpacking.
