some short Endura-opening vids, and a question...

okay, here's a couple short clips of me opening and closing my Endura using the "drop" and the "flick" methods.

clip 1
clip 2

i'm sure we're all familiar with both, but here comes the question: can any of these methods be used on the Kiwi? i'll go out on a limb and assume it can be "dropped", but can i close it the same way shown in the vids? and for that matter:

what models have you all successfully flicked/dropped? are there any worthy FRN candidates? i can't get my FRN Delica to drop without really snapping my wrist a lot.

You can definitely drop the Kiwi, it's got a relatively big heavy butt. The blade on mine will not fall when the lock is released, but I supposed it might loosen up over time. I haven't tried to flick mine, but it's pretty small and might end of flying across the room (hard to get a good grip on).

sounds good! yeah, my Endura wouldn't fall on its own for a few weeks until i really got some use out of her...

whoa.

i have never functionally opened a spydie with either of those methods.

i feel like opening a knife like that takes too much preemptive. like you have to get your hand(s) in the right position and then use your whole arm's motion to get the blade out.

that's pretty crazy stuff.

one method that i use to open a spydie is by "flicking" it opened via hole with my middle finger. works fastest if you're carrying tip up.

the drop is so completely second-nature to me, i don't even notice it as i'm opening the knife. it's my usual way. i sometimes use the flick if i'm entertaining myself (out of boredom), or if my knife is already in my hand before i need to open it. after a couple tries at either method, it becomes natural and dare i say, safe?

i can't remember the last time i opened the thing with my thumb, unless i'm making a conscious effort not to alarm those around me (in public, whatever).

thanks for adding the mention of middle-finger opening. i'll try it.

Another method is to grip the base of the knife (end where point lies) between the thumb and forefinger. A rapid dipping of hand followed by a whip-like snap of the wrist upward leaves the blade opened in a reverse edge-out grip.

Great video, allyourblood.

Flicking open, and the Spydiedrop, don't seem that practical to me, but I occasionally do them for fun. Kind of hard on a knife, too.
For regular use I just use the thumbhole the normal way.
To each his own.

thanks. yeah, i agree, the motions are a little hard on the knife, but if i had to pick a brand of knife to do it with, it'd definitely be the tough-as-nails Spydies. the "flick" tends to be a little showoff-ish, so i don't do it that often, but the drop is just too fun to resist. thanks for the kind words! have fun!

I can drop open all four of my spyderco. I have a Paramilitary, Delica (FRN), Calypso Jr. (FRN), and a Jester (FRN). The Delica is the easiest to drop open. The Jester takes a bit more force to flick it open, but I actually prefer to open it that way. The small opening hole gives me trouble, and sometimes I get it half open, then place fingers on the inside to get better leverage, but if I slip, i get a little bite from the Jester! I have a SS Cricket in the mail, which I presume will be super easy to drop open.

I always carry tip-down Spydies, grip the hole when removing them from my pocket, flick my wrist and the blades open immediately as in clip 1. It's worked with all of my Spydies that are tip down. Tip up knives work with your clip 2 method.

For me, I like snaping the knife back when opening it. Much more sheeple friendly since they get a bit squimish when you flip a 4" Military directly at them.
Open it behind you and they only hear a click. You can then only present as much blade as you deem necessary.

But, that's just me.

AYB: the drop is my favorite way to open the kiwi. You inspired me to make my own video.

Kiwi Drop

My blade will fall closed easily, it is very smooth.

woo hoo! that was just what i wanted to see! thanks! if i don't find this under the tree on the 25th, i'll be ordering it on the 26th!!

i typically go with either the "flick" or the snap-to-reverse as described by rick in ky if opening quickly, unless my spydie is sitting on a table, in which case i might well go with the drop. always rather dug the snap-to-reverse. doable behind the back, as in not in anyone's face. on a still very tight knife, i usually finger-assist the "flick". still working on finger-assisting the open-to-reverse with my pinky

nice vids, guys!

The wife surprised me this morning with a Kiwi!!!!
