Some Things You'd Only Do If You Had A Metal Cutting Bandsaw...

Like cut into a 2 X 2 X 6 chunk of brass... I hate to think what this would've been like if I only had a hacksaw. In those conversations 'What tools should one get first,' I think the bandsaw would have to be third, right after grinder and drill press.

This was my second run at this big ringed guard. The first time I thought I would anneal it and bend the ring in...but I left the brass in the forge too long and it melted! I don't think I'd have been able to bend the ring in anyway though.

you're lucky...
very, very lucky.
*sniff* I can only dream of a metal cutting bandsaw... and dream I do. ;)

Someday....

:D Philip, believe it or not, it only took about two hours and a half from first cut to what you see there. Practice makes perfect! :D

I'm zeroing in on this baby, next big hurdle is soldering. I've been just doing bolsters up to now, and <knocking on wood> haven't needed solder. But I do on these joints! :o

Holy cow Dave! that was a huge job in itself. I agree it would have been many many hours with a hack-saw (for me anyway!).

I'm with Peter, I want to see it when the knife is complete! You've really got me curious now! :D

I'm new to the motor driven tool thing... are bandsaws that cut metal uncommon?

Nice work, BTW. Even if I had a year, there is no way that I could make that as clean with a hacksaw.

Krept,
Metal cutting bandsaws aren't uncommon, just expensive ( for a nice one). Its hard to justify the expense if your doing this as a hobby. But if your doing something like dave did there, its well worth it.
You can buy a cheap import bandsaw from harbor freight but it won't be very well suited to jobs like that gaurd.

Thats awesome Dave, definitely post a pic of the knife when its done. Not only would I have needed a day and a half to finish that with a hacksaw, it would have been severely dented form all the times I threw it down on the floor or bounced it off the wall ;)

Hey Matt, you can do it with the HF bandsaw, cause that's sure all I have! I even was using a gap-toothed blade! That was absolutely the best $150 I've ever spent, and I recommend everyone should have one. No kidding. It might save your work from being bounced off the wall!

Dave

Really? Everything I'd heard about those saws is that were underpowered and you couldn't get decent blades. I may have to rethink that though as $150 isn't bad at all :)
For some reason I was thinking you were the guy who just bought that mamoth saw that could cut a car in two and had a built in welder to make and repair blades.
