Some thoughts on Forum Bullies

I've noticed lately in the Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades Forum that certain members take it upon themselves to be "self appointed Mods". They jump right in telling other members, not always newbies, what to post, when to post, and where to post. They, sometimes very rudely, tell a poster to "search the Forum, we had that Thread last year" or some such. Or maybe something like "You're thread belongs in Maintenance, not in Traditionals". Some of these folks are downright rude, and most are bullies. Get over yourself! LET PEOPLE POST their ideas!!! We have MODS whose job it is to keep the Forums on an even keel! If you see something you don't care for, MOVE ON! No one appointed you a super mod! We don't need a Thread Director, self appointed by an over indulgence in narcissism to jump on any post he/she doesn't like!

Moderators only, if this is not the correct Forum this, please move it. Thank You.

If everybody did just refer back to old threads, the General Knife Discussion would be rather quiet

Telling someone that the search forum exists , is frequent in a lot of threads, I mean think about it there is only so many things you can talk about blades, I agree though there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it. If the same person keeps "calling you out" try emailing or pming them and asking them if they have a problem with you, Some people are gonna be rude regardless others have more patience, bottom line that's life, If it's the same person over and over add them to your ignore list.

BTW this topic has been discussed 100 times before , the search function is your friend :p J/K

I understand that the search function is your friend but I for one do not mind answering a simple question from a newbie rather than tell them to go search. They may or may not even know how to go about searching for their question. Now if they continue to do it time and time again than a easy push towards the search function is appropriate.

Or....if some of the old threads were actually sought out and maybe read, a fresh and even more interesting perspective and discussion could be had. Right?

On another note, while the search function is available to all people, you also have equal access to an ignore function. It can be easily used with great success with a few clicks.

Note to all who dare to tread here: Conduct yourselves in a civil manner, avoid pointing fingers or making any one individual the target of your ire and make your points in a clear and rational way.

Points can be made without insults or singling out individuals. Let's try to avoid having to have the moderators step in to either mete out warnings / infractions or close the thread.

Hopefully this will serve as sufficient word to the wise.

I regard the OP as a complete misrepresentation. We have a good community in Traditionals, and a good mod team. Bullying of any kind is certainly not tolerated there.

The pace is a bit slower in Traditionals, than in General, and sometimes we get new posters putting up new threads replicating other threads just a few posts down. The mods have been working hard to amalgamate some the new threads into the existing ones.

Also, sometimes a poster asks a question, which might be answered in another thread. Here's an example:

I'm back to making handles for hidden tang fixed blades.

I'm open to anything, but I'm especially interested in handles that melt into the hand. Big or small front guard that leads to a finger groove, nice and round in the middle and ending with a finger groove for the little finger.

That might be a bit to specific, but everything is welcome, especially since I'll make more than one.

As always I forgot to mention something. I'd mostly like to see homemade knives with Scandinavian style blades. The Scandinavian style is not necessary.

Jack, I quickly ran trough some pages, but I didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I'm sure it's in there somewhere amongst all the others.

That should narrow it down some :)

I doubt that any normal person would regard that as 'bullying'.

I have to say I see the opposite. The Trad forum is by far the most civil of all the subfoums. Jack Black is a regular and positive contributor to the Trad forum. He has always been a gentleman as far as I can see. Sorry you got put off hopefully you can try the Trad forum again.

Thank you Billy, I have to say that I think this attack, on me personally, and on the Traditional forum in general, is not based in reality at all, as anyone who visits Traditionals will know. I don't regard this as a misunderstanding, but rather as a malignant and spiteful attack by an individual with a badly bruised ego. I regret having to respond to this kind of smear, which I think sullies the forum, and I extend my apologies to those who contribute so much here, and have to deal with this sort of regretable nonsence.

Sorry to say I disagree. I didn't attack anybody personally. I didn't attack the Traditional. I am simply stating my personal opinion and will continue to do so. With or with out the violins.

You attacked ME personally (see below). You have no factual basis whatsoever for your 'opinion'.

well it seems they know who of I speak

I agree with OP. When someone says to use the search function, I tend to think it's annoying. So what if there is already a favorite knife thread?

1. Necroposting is frowned upon
2. People don't post in those threads, meaning they're old (that's why someone made another one). If you search an old thread, you can't post in it because of necroposting rules, are you supposed to just read old threads? People want to see new, fresh posts. Knives change. People change. I'd like to see new entries in a Favorite knife thread or something, but no, some people feel they need to take the time to tell someone that a thread exists.

Like seriously, can't you just move past the thread instead of making a poster feel like an idiot ? :grumpy:

This is not a discussion, it's an argument. If you have issues with a forum member's posts or behavior, use the alert button to inform the moderators so that they can take appropriate action.
Let's move on.
