Some thoughts on weapons and the ground

About once a month Ron Balicki used to teach groundfighting with knives. He had a lot of disarms that he could perform with his feet. Also some return-to-sender options (with his hands). Unfortunately, I haven't had a class with him in a couple years and don't remember the material clearly enough that I'd want to describe it without a refresher session.

Guros Inosanto and Crafty Dog teach a lot of stickgrappling from the standing position through groundfighting. At past Gatherings, I've seen it frequently. On the ground I'd rather be facing a stick than a knife.

I forgot about R. Balicki. I like his third tape a lot which does have defender (empty hands on the bottom) vs attacker (standing or or on the side with a knife). Some of the moves are doable with time, the return to sender move I'm not sure about.

My friend liked the throw to the side (leaving one hand on his arm while you retrieve the stripped knife). Both of us agree, that it's gonna take some practice for this set of moves to flow freely.

I've seen disarms with the feet, not my cup of tea but I may try it.

Smoke your thoughts on the subject seem pretty good to me.

One thing to remember is the use of an inserted blade as a
handle to move your opponent while grappling. This adds a big advantage when fighting for position.

this may not be new to some folks, but when i first read it on ED about 2-3 yrs ago, it was new to me: Hock taught hubud on the ground using the legs to do the hubud motion while the man on top would attack with a knife.

If it were up to me, I'd stick to shorter tools, such as the Stinger and my namesake. Longer sticks seem like a serious leverage hassle.

FWIW, Hock's DMS tapes (if memory serves) have some work from the ground as well. Basically a lot of buttstroke/punyo work.

Other than that, I can't see a bit to argue about.

did not get a stinger yet. did not even know what it is. i vaguely recalled a thread on it and lo and behold, i found the thread and went to JAK's site to check it out.

seems interesting. i will be ordering soon :)

Smoke:

Appears I overlooked "knife" in your post. A knife in such a situation is a great equalizer. My aim in recommending short tools was chiefly for the poor bastard on the bottom, who could probably break free with short movements & tools that should be nearly impossible to see from the top position. On top, I'd still go with as short a stick as I felt comfortable with. For me that would be 18" max, which should still allow a fang choke if I'm lucky enough to apply it.
