Awhile back, forum member Rksoon sent me his F1 to try out. I had gotten to see it when I was in Cali and really liked it. Nice knife. Sharp, plain low key looks, good ballance, and a suprisingly comfortable handle. I would not be sad if SHTF and this is all I had.
My son immeadiatly latched on to this one. For a 12yr old, he is a pretty darn good hardwoodsman. He takes very good direction, and picks up important skills very well. He builds shelters, traps, fires, and is one heck of a fisherman and hunter. Ive spent the majority of this season out with him as my companion. Hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, and just good ol bushwhacking. From his time with hands on practice, and talking with me, he is getting pretty well versed in what makes a good blade, and what he likes. The F1 is his favorite blade Ive had so far....Strange, cause Ive had some beautys. Barkies, ESEEs, and a whole buffet of custom blades from the talented guys around here.
Since weve had the F1, its cleaned around 40 fish. From tiny bluegill, to big ol' 25+ lb Catfish. This is a thick knife. However, it handles these chores very well! The edge retention skinning catfish was phenominal. Ive dulled lots of knives on catfish alot easier then this one. Its also seen quite a few hours in the kitchen and gardern harvesting veggies, and preparing meals. It slices very well, and keeps its edge nicely. Woodcraft is another skill I have some time in with it. After you get used to the technique with thicker convex ground steel, it does a great job notching, and with fire prep. The VG10 steel is stainless. All the nasty work this one has done.....not a spot on the blade.
Overall, we are very impressed with the F1.
I havent been posting alot lately. Mostly due to computer problems at home, and a very busy schedule at work. When im off work, Id rather be in the woods doing, and teaching my son, then sitting in front of a computer screen.
So I dont have many pics of this seasons outings as far as WSS type pics go...However, I am going to make an effort to contribute more around here.
Heres some pics I took yesterday.....sorry about the blurry pics.
I harvested some veggies from the garden and made a nice salad for lunch. Something cool about growing. Its a great feeling watching a garden you and your family planted take shape. Not too long ago, all 5 of us(wife and 3 sons) were playing in the dirt, turning a spot of soil into a fruitfull garden. This is a salad consisting of cucumbers, peppers, tomato, dill, and brocolli. All grown right here. I make a nice yogurt based dressing for it.
Went out and giged some frogs last night with the boy. We went to a fish hatchery that has upwards of 100 ponds. Perfect place to gig. Also this is all owned by family friends so not a soul to bother with us. We took off at 10pm and by the time we cleaned em, it was 3am. My son cleaned all of his kills, without complaints of being tired or anything. Saw a few snakes out there. Mostly the eastern water snakes, but I did almost step on a cottonmouth. To clean em, we just kill, cut around the waist, and de pants em. I used the F1 exclusively on my frogs, however my son much prefered using the Swiss Tool Spirit. The scissors zipped right through the skin, and the pliars to remove the pants. He worked circles around me. I was impressed at the speed of this method. There is something about going out, and putting meat in the freezer with your boy. Side by side. Just awesome.
Hope you enjoyed the pics, and Ill start bringing the camera along on our future outings.
