Some Watermelon Cutting Vids (Nice and Small)

It certainly seemed to be in the spirit of things...

My camcorder is officially OOC with a damaged port for the FireWire. I don't know when I'll be able to get it fixed. In the meantime, I was forced to make do with my digital camera, opening a new can of worms in the process. It seems that my camera prefers recording videos in Quicktime format which is entirely too large. Because Quicktime is produced by a competitor, Windows Movie Maker (the editing program I normally use) doesn't work with it. What ensued was several hours of black comedy as I attempted to track down a free converter that wouldn't leave a trial version message across the screen. I finally found one.

The resulting movies have been converted twice (once to .avi, once to .wmv) and didn't look so hot to begin with. You can imagine how they look now. I apologize in advance for the poor quality. On the plus side, they're nice and small.

The first two videos were done with a 20" siru; the third was done with a M43. (The forumite who sold it to me might recognize it.) Both feature cho creep and habaki bolsters. Neither had been used for a bit on account of the BGRS (and now the Foxy Folly) and it felt good to swing them again.

For those of you who cut and haven't tried watermelons, I heartily recommend it. It's fairly messy, lots of fun, and you can eat the results if you're careful about it. (Ain't summer great?) The only downside is that it tends to draw the yellowjackets and you already know how I feel about them.

First up: Link.

Second: Link.

Third: Link.

In the third video, my third swing appears to be a miss but was in fact a hit; due to the vagaries of video editing on the cheap, the piece that flew free is invisible. You'll just have to trust me on that one.

I did cut up a fourth one with a Jange but I knocked it off the stand on the second cut. That's what I get for never swinging it.

I really have to get my camcorder up and running. I'm almost embarrassed to post these. :)

Dayum!!!! Those are great for a dig camera Satori, really great!!!!
And you say you have no training whatsoever?

If I didn't trust you I'd say bullsh*t!!!! :p ;) :D

It must be the traditional watermelon you are using that makes it all come together...

The cat is out of the bag: they were seedless watermelons, as that was what was on sale. My apologies.

On a related note, Oscar the Attack Cat seems to enjoy watermelon. This should make the cleanup considerably easier. The lawnmower will handle the rest, I suppose.

Quite honestly, it's not that he's "oh so good" or "using his experience from training the RAF" (just hearing stories from work on that one). Aside the vass amounts of smack he talks at work, he's usually got his face buried in a book of swordsmanship or some WWII books. One could go so far as to say he's self-taught.

Just so this doesn't seem like a "Satori's oh so cool" post...

"He's got bad follow-through"
"He's got OCD when it comes to keeping things sharp"
and last but definately not least..
"He looks like Shrek"

Nice vids btw

Really, Satori, youve developed a very accurate cut.
Im a martial artist, I live in Japan and train three days a week and I couldnt cut nearly that well.
A request:
This time, cut the melon three times, keeping your empty hand flat on your belly button. After the third cut, switch hands and cut the melon some more using your left hand.

Gunnerike? I'm guilty on all three counts, although growing out my hair for the summer has cut down on the Shrek comparisons to a large degree. Thank you for the kind comments. Stand by for a kancho at work tomorrow, and hope that my follow through remains poor.

Danny, I only recently got to the point where I can swing something right-handed without hitting myself. I've got a ways to go before attempting a stunt like that. (Or rather, before I can pull it off without an ambulance ride.) I guess that it's time to stop putting off the left handed practice.

Lovely, Ms514. Thank you. I've seen similar things, but not that one.

I will be very sad when we leave the Camp.
