I got out in the woods this morning for a short walk at a friends farm. He has a big CRP field and a wooded ridge, that I like to walk. Normally I see wildlife or a lot of sign, and today was no different. There is a spring that served as a water supply for a farmhouse years ago, that house is long gone.

Whats left of the old farm house foundation

the spring used to feed a pond but a hole opened up in it- it's very karst around here and we have lots of sinkholes

It was a little cold and windy this morning- even got a few snow flurries

Here is the knife I took along- the JK Cutlass
did a little batoning and a few curls

I received this as part of a pass around, and I'm the 4th person to try it. Protourist here on BF came up with the design- to quote him "Yesterday John and I discussed a heavy duty skinner that I'd like. It will be roughly 13 1/2 inches overall with a roughly 8 1/4 inch blade of 3/16 O-1. The design is sort of a cross between a Randall 3 and a Randall 4 and it will have Ebony scales"

I know he designed it for use on game, (I have already used it on a doe, and was very pleased with it's performance there) but I had to try it on wood. He did have the spine rounded, which is comfortable when you place your hand on it, but that negated using the spine for a striker. I thought the thumb ramp and jimping would still work, but I couldn't get a good repetitive shower of sparks using it.

Even though it was cold and windy, it was great to spend a few minutes out in the woods.

Looks like a fun area. The thing I take most out of those pictures? I really need to work on my fuzz sticks. Yours really make mine look bad.

I really don't think mine are great, I need to practice.

I can't figure out how come that one photo won't display right. It's right in photobucket, but put it here and its sideways. Frustrating

Man that looks like a nice place to wander around, love all the critter sign.

You sure are giving Mack's cutlass a great workout too.

Thanks for the pics, they remind me I need to get off my butt & get out in the woods.

Thanks for the pictures, kyturkey!

I really liked that knife, so much so that I have one on order from John for March. ;^)

best regards -

Looks like a nice day out. I love coming across places where old houses used to be.

Thanks for sharing the pics with us. I haven't gotten out very much recently, due to the lack of colder weather, so most of the areas I usually go are still full of water/ a lot of mud. I don't mind mud, in the spring or summer. In the winter.. I want cold and snow.

Ever come across funky old bottles ? I find that to be quite interesting. There are SO MANY things to do outdoors that even a simple walk can be a kaleidescope of beauty and interesting finds. Nice post O.P., and that's a hell of a knife.

I have run across some older bottles but nothing too funky.

I'm hoping to do a couple nights out later this year there, and hopefully on some relatives farms too.

I have to ask. How did that big Cutlass carry while hiking? Would it be one that you'd be likely to carry?

Nice pics. I remember when turkey were all but extinct in this area but now we are covered up with them.

I have found some really interesting old bottles usually to the back of yards were they burned garbage. I usually keep an eye out for mushrooms or asparagus also. It goes to seed and turns yellow in the fall, looks like small yellow spruce trees. Gives a heads up for cutting down next spring.
