I got out in the woods this morning for a short walk at a friends farm. He has a big CRP field and a wooded ridge, that I like to walk. Normally I see wildlife or a lot of sign, and today was no different. There is a spring that served as a water supply for a farmhouse years ago, that house is long gone.
Whats left of the old farm house foundation
the spring
the spring used to feed a pond but a hole opened up in it- it's very karst around here and we have lots of sinkholes
wildlife sign (hope the turkeys are there come spring)
It was a little cold and windy this morning- even got a few snow flurries
Here is the knife I took along- the JK Cutlass
did a little batoning and a few curls
I received this as part of a pass around, and I'm the 4th person to try it. Protourist here on BF came up with the design- to quote him "Yesterday John and I discussed a heavy duty skinner that I'd like. It will be roughly 13 1/2 inches overall with a roughly 8 1/4 inch blade of 3/16 O-1. The design is sort of a cross between a Randall 3 and a Randall 4 and it will have Ebony scales"
I know he designed it for use on game, (I have already used it on a doe, and was very pleased with it's performance there) but I had to try it on wood. He did have the spine rounded, which is comfortable when you place your hand on it, but that negated using the spine for a striker. I thought the thumb ramp and jimping would still work, but I couldn't get a good repetitive shower of sparks using it.
Even though it was cold and windy, it was great to spend a few minutes out in the woods.
