  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

My son (15yrs) and I went into some woods behind our house today so I could teach him how to make a fire from spark, got him a Light My Fire scout a few days ago, Its only about an acre of woods but once in the middle of it you woudn't know, on the way in I found about a 25lb piece of fatwood, so I cut off a piece for tender, anyway I showed him how to clear a area for the fire so not to burn down the whole place, and then had him gather some dead wood to get the fire going once he got flame, found a cedar branch also, so now we got a clear area, a nice pile of twigs and sticks, then had him make shavings out of the cedar and fatwood. Now it was time, about twenty strikes on the fire steel and wha'la we had flame, took a bit to get it to sustain itself but for his first I was impressed, must have been his teaching, we let the fire burn for about 30min then put it out, dragged the fatwood back to the driveway and cut it up into some smaller pieces, kept the nicest stuff and made a fire in the fire pit with the rest, then we roasted some smoked sausage in the drizzling rain, It was a nice morning.

Very cool. Those are the kind of days I remember most growing up. I bet he will never forget.

Right on. There's something special about your first outdoors fire-making experience. Definitely a day that will be long remembered.

All the best,

- Mike

I think they remember days like that more than football, baseball, or other activities. Good for you and your son.
