How does one straighten the blade opening and locking on the 2001 Commanders so it doesn't hit the liners. I have spent a ton of time with this knife is the last 3wks sharpening it and getting used to the wave feature. Have it down pretty patt but the biggest thing that is irking me to no end is the blade scraping the liner on opening and closing the knife. Emailed EKI and so far haven't rec. any answer. Is it the locking ball bearing on the opposite side of the liner lock that is doing this? Mine sticks out of the liner it appears alot farther than on my 7 or Mach1. Has anyone ever attempted to reseat this back into itself a bit? Any help short of sending the knife back is appreciated. Keep'em sharp

Having owned and sold Emerson Knives since 1998 I have run into this problem also. The first thing I would check is the tension on the main pivot screw Sometimes after a lot of use especially wave practice teh screw backs out a bit the blade will then deploy very easily but may not be held in alignment inside the liners. I find my Commander loosens a bit and then rubs on opening, tightening the main screw just a bit will pull the blade over. Just do not over tighten.

Second solution is to take the knife apart, check the plastic teflon washers. One may be worn causing the blade to seat in frame to oneside more than the other.

As a last step check the detent I have seated them more fully on some of my Emersons. It works in moving the blade over. Just go slow on the detent.

When taking apart any Emersons be careful with the blade stops and the other pins, they can get lost real easy!

I have run into this problem on maybe 3 Emerson knives. A Commander 2000, Mach 1 2000 and a Commander 2001. I have sold hundreds of Emersons though without problems.

My 99 Commander has never had this problem and it has been almost a daily carry knife.

John L thanks a bunch for the info. I will give it a shot this p.m.. nothing to lose in tyring. I have tried the loosening and tightening the pivot screw but when I loosen it the knife centers perfectly but then there doesn't seem to be any tension whatsoever on the blade as it rests between the liners in the closed pos.. I then go very slowly retightening the screw until the blade play in the closed position is gone. Still no good as it scrapes the liners either way.

The scrapping of the blade on the liners can be really irritating. Gives this link a look. It could be that the second ball detent tension needs to be eased off a bit.

Hope that helps

:)

Edit: PS What Jon has suggested is also good. Check to see if the washers are flush against the liners,(the tension of the pivot pin may have to be adjusted, by simply tightening it or either having to disassemble/unscrew the pivot pin then rescrewing it ensuring that the blade, washers and liners are all tightly packed against each other when rescrewing)

Thanks fella's I think it is the locking detent. I have compared the detent to my 7 and Mach1. The 7 is without a doubt the best of the bunch as concerning the centering etc. The detent on it is almost flat against the liner. I will experiment. I know it can be done! Hey have I told you guys how sharp my CQC is? Well let me tell ya. As you all know I have been working off and on with the edges of the EKI's. Just this week I had delivered a Starmate that is beyond sharp. Now I have been working diligently this a.m. with my 7A as regards to the edge. Well let me tell ya something, this thing is now beyond sharp too! I have noticed that the point on my 7 is alot more so than on my Mach1 or Commander. Wish I could get the other 2 like the 7A. It even sticks in my cutting board. The other 2 don't. Anyways good info as usual on adjustments. I will post as to how I make out. The CQC 7A is now my official daily carry. My 800, 550, and others have taken a back seat. Even though the 800 and 550 are excellant and the 550 is probably more people friendly. I could go on and on but won't bore you all with the details any longer....Keep'em sharp

PS anyone have any info on sharpening the EKI LaGriffe? A fella sent me one as gift when I purchased a knife from him. thanks

On sharpening the La Griffe is it the all titanium one? if it is titanium, then Mission Knives makes a sharpener called the NMS. It is a non-magnetic sharpener and will not contaminate titanium blades. Use only on sharpener on it, do not use a sharpener that has contacted metal blades. Titanium is a hard thing to sharpen! I had a Mission Knife the MPS it was all Ti. It would wear out a ceramic stone before you could sharpen it! The only thing that will get a great edge on it is a diamond stone.
I have sold Mission Knives and most buyers of those knives get the NMS also to sharpen them.
The NMS is nice it is a round file and fits in the pocket so it is the right size for a smaller job like the La Griffe.

Well screwed around with the Commander this p.m. and have without a doubt the smoothest opening Commander that may have ever been produced! It is now definetly on a par with my S2K. I also solved the blade hitting the liner problem too. Although it still doesn't center like on my 7 it now has tension when in the closed position and the open position with an almost free floating blade. What I mean is you can use your wrist to snap the blade open with very little effort at all and the blade locks up dead tight with no lateral play and when it is closed and you use the disk to open it the blade does not wander off towards the liners. I have used Wilson's Ultima Lube on the washers and made sure the whole knife was very clean. I then bent the locking detent back into the liner. That was the hardest part of all to do in the whole process. The only problem I see with the blade being in the freee floating pos. like this is that the liner locks up a little past center. Put about 1/8 turn on the screw adj. and it now locks up just fully passed the width of the liner, perfect. I did the same thing to my 7A I was so pleased with how the Comm. came out. Unfortunately it didn't improve the 7 like it did the Comm. It is still good mind you just a bit different. Now there is no grittiness in either. Later after taking the wife out to the movies I am going to work on my Mach1. Can't believe how smooth the Commander is. Unreal smooth. As for my La Griffe it is not Ti. It is 154cm. I am starting to get it kind of sharp especially the claw. I am thinking of giving it to my eldest who is in college. He is studying Okinawan karate and he has taken a shine to it. Keep'em sharp gotta rock.
