I Am 41 Years Old, For The Last 35 Of Them I Have Wanted To Make Knives As A Hobby To Keep Me Busy During Long Michigan Winters.
I Have Purchased A Kmg 2x72 Belt Sander A Small Quantity Blade Steel But I Am Having A Hard Time Getting Started. I Have The Funds To Buy About Any Equipment I May Need. I Have A 30x40 Workshop. Are There Any Videos That Can Get Me Started?

Hi. I would recommend placing a call to the knife suppliers and getting their catalogs sent to you. They have video and book selections in them to help get anyone started on what they need.

Knife and Gun finishing supplies - 1-800-972-1192

Texas knife maker supply- 1-888-461-8632

Jantz supply- 1-800-351-8900

These are the three I use the most. Hope that helps a little.

Good luck

Where are you at, Tim? (hint: fill in yer profile under User CP). There are knifemakers all over Michigan. Several visit here frequently.

I suggest getting a copy of Knives 2006 ($16.95@amazon.com). In the back there is a listing of knifemakers by state/city. You might have one in your own town.... Nothing like a teacher to make it easier.

Have fun. Bad habit, making knives... ;)

Tim,

Welcome!

You don't say whether you're more interested in stock removal or forgeing....

Stock Removal....
One of the best videos I've seen is "The Loveless Legend: How to Make Custom Knives."
This, as the name suggests, features Bob Loveless and is an excellent, step by step how to video.
As for forgeing...........
There are several available, but the only one I've seen is Ed Caffrey's which is quite good.

Good luck!

Mike

i think that the thing that'll help you most at this point is to give me that KMG and start off with a good ol' bastard file instead. ;) :D

Also, get the book "How to Make Knives" by Bob Loveless and Richard Barney. I learned from that book back before there were knifemaking videos, and it's still valuable.

Four books I highly recomend, Wayne Goddard's "Wonder of Knifemaking" & "50$ knife shop" and Ed Fowler's "Knife Talk" 1&2. They have loads of interesting reading and Wayne's "Wonder of Knifemaking" has a lot of question and answeres from his section in Blade mag. Anouther wonderful resource is rite here, bladeforums. Welcome and look around, there's a ton of good info.

get every one you can find, watch them till your sick of them and then sell them for 1/2 price here. It will take years off of your learning curve. To be sure there some pretty crummy videos out there and the production standards are horrible on most but I got several things out of every single one and I'm pretty sure I've owned most every one of them at some point or other and I'd do it again if I had to start over.... Also, read the old messages here. Lot's of good stuff and most questions have been asked and answered at least once. ...welcome to the madness....

I Am Near Merrill Michigan In The Center Of Lower Peninsula. How Many Years Have You Been A Knife Maker. Thank You For Your Time...

Tim, there are 40 makers listed in MI in that book. You could probably start a thread and ask if there are any makers close by you that would allow you to visit. A good way to jumpstart the learning curve! :)

I don't know who your "how many years?" was directed at. I got serious in 1981.

I see you are interested in guitars? Make 'em, play 'em, or collect 'em? Though I don't play much anymore because of some hand problems, i still have wayyy more many guitars than I should have! ;)

If you want to make knives bad enough, you just got to start making them:) I started around 1982 with a piece of old saw blade a 1''x42'' belt sander, files and sand papper. Once I was bitten by the bug, I bought a 2''x72''Wilton Square Wheel and started cranking em out. Get out in the shop and start cuttin and grindin:D Also ask lots of questions right here, they will be answered.

Get yourself some 36, 60, 120, 220, and 400 grit belts...about 12 each with some steel and go at it. You'll want a 200 dollar harbor freight bandsaw to make things a little easier.

Keep in touch here also....the best place for info :)
