Someday a SMART multitool company will have their design departments start reading these type of forums to dial in what folks REALLY want in a multitool.

If you think about it, they already have bins full of the parts ready to be assembled into multitools. If they took some exceptional employee(s) and set them aside from the main assembly line; they could build out the custom tool orders in a reasonably short amount of time. They could have an online order/price sheet for the individual implements/tools, and allow a customer to spec what they want.

I for one don't need 4 different size screwdrivers, at the expense of a good quality/size knife blade, easier to access tools, or other debris catchers that I don't particularly find useful:jerkit:

And for their weight most I've handled don't feel comfortable in medium to hard use, and my faith in their durability always makes me leery of a 'kitchen sink'

There's the rub. Users have different needs/preferences. I want and use several differently sized screwdriver blades and carry a separate knife.

I would lose the knife for a larger pair of scissors and higher torque longer reach screwdrivers.

Getting a custom SAK or multi-tool would be awesome. But the makers know that I would buy just one of 'em, as compared to the 20 or so of the stock models that I currently have. They are in this to make money, and the current scheme does that.

cheers

Gerber offered such a service for awhile online and found it was not very productive or cost effective. For those of you with a bit of technical skill, you can construct the SAK of your dreams from parts of other SAKs, since they are built in layers. My personal favorite is a Yeoman with the addition of a metal file and pliers with plus scales.

The Leatherman Blast is ALMOST the perfect multi-tool.

The only thing I would change is the tiny eyeglasses screwdriver.
I would probably replace it with an awl...a nice sharp awl and not like the dull useless one on the old PST.

Swiss tool Spirit plus with one hand opening knife would be great...

Yup. I love the blade on my Swisstool Spirit. About as good as they come for food prep (notably apple cutting/eating) as well as many other things. I like that razor shape. Hell, you can even open it with the tool closed; all they need to do is make a little cut out in the handle and throw a thumbstud on it!

Hmm...that doesn't sound too hard at all...

A SOG EOD Power Lock that with tool access WITHOUT opening the pliers and one hand opening (like the LM Wave) would be the object of my wishful thinking. . . and wallet!
