... and you hand them yours. Do you open it before you hand it to them, or do you let them figure it out, or do you show them what to do? With so many different types - AO, flipper, studs, no studs, etc - unless they know what they're doing, it might take some doing for them to get the thing open.

What do you do?

I don't hand it to them, unless I trust them w/my life/tools/multitools/knives/flashlight/car/etc... Ither I cut it, or if the second is correct then I open it and give the knife, also I'm asking it back to close it...

What do you need to cut? I'll cut it for you.

Is my response.

Exactly this. Unless you know how the person treats knives, don't loan out your knives. Then again, if you know how they treat knives, where's theirs?

One of the few times I loaned out a knife it was returned with a broken tip after it was used to force a lock... to say the least I was pissed. They replaced the knife at least, but the original had sentimental value... I learned my lesson that day.

I'm a cook, and I trust that the majority of the other cooks/kitchen staff understand how to use/respect a cutting tool. If someone needs to borrow my knife, I usually open it for them, but for the most part, no one ever knows how to close them so they just hand it back to me still open lol.

I never hand anybody a one handed opening folder that I carry. I always have a SAK on me. I hand them the SAK, which is (a) cheaper and (b) probably more in line with what they expect when they ask for a "pocket knife." If they can't figure out how to open a SAK, then they're not tall enough for this ride.

Usually don't loan it out, because lately I've been carrying knives I can't replace, like my 2011 BF EO jack, or my CPM m4 Millie. For a while I was carrying my Opinel #6, and I would love loaning that out. People saw the beat up wood handle, stained blade, and for some reason assume it's dull. Even though they know I carry sharp knives only. It bit more than a couple people who felt the need to test the edge with their fingers.

One of the knives I EDC is an Izula , so if I think the person knows what they are doing I will lend it . No opening or closing needed .
If it turns out I was wrong , then I cut whatever it was while they're gone to get a Bandaid ;)

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

It's been a while since anyone asked to borrow a knife. I usually see people reaching for scissors or something else to cut something. Accidents waiting to happen in my opinion.

Last time someone asked to use my knife it was my best friend he had his new Glock with him so he figured he didn't need a knife. Last time he makes that mistake this is why you can't compair a knife to a gun. Said thing is he uses his knife all day long at work and this was the first time since I've meet him where he had not had a knife on him for no good reason.
Other than that I get people asking me to cut things for them guess they know better.

i've been asked pretty frequently in our plot/print room at work (the only place i will loan one out, never in general public), most people know i have one on me, i usually open it and close it for them if it's not a slip joint. I do carry a peanut and SAK on me as well so i can loan out without fear.

i loaned my tenacious to a coworker to cut plastic wrap it returned to me with dings in the blade and and scratches on the finish. was pissed. since then no loaning or sometimes i carry a kershaw crown i got for $5 to loan out, don't care about that one at all.

If it's a user knife then it's no big deal other than that it's a no.

I usually ask them what they need it for and reach for my SAK or Gerber MT. I open the appropriate tool first upon determining their intended use and hand it to them.

For example, if someone tells me they want to cut a a loose thread, I will open up the scissors. If they need to pry open a paint can lid, I will open up the screwdriver/cap lifter. If I don't want anyone using the main blade for for that.

I will not let anyone borrow a one-handed locking blade. That stays in my pocket for my own use only.

I carry an Opinel with me now, I have nothing to say, just hand it over. :D

I go into a rage, and stab them over and over in the face while I yell, "HERE YA GO, JUST DON'T GET BLOOD ON IT!!!":mad::mad:

Or if I like the person that asked me, I ask what they are cutting, and if it's reasonable, I open and hand my worst knife over (if I am carrying more than one). I keep a beater in my desk at work for just that purpose. It is a good way for me to get rid of knife clutter for knives I wouldn't consider selling. So far only one person dropped my knife of a pier, but no damage to any others. I did have someone ask to borrow my Sebenza when I had it, and I asked why, and he showed me a Comm floor tile (about 2' by 2', prolly weighs 20 pounds, he wanted to pry up from the floor. I handed him a prybar.
