I’m looking for a sheepfoot folder with a plain edge. I want a blade length between 2-3’’. Type of lock not important but I’d prefer a back lock. Something very similar to a spyderco rescue 79mm with a plain edge. Actually, that knife would be perfect if it came in black and plain edge. I know spyderco makes the atlantic salt in plain edge but that blade is way too long. I’d like something closer to 2’’. This is mostly going to be used to do dental lab work. I’d appreciate it too if you guys could include a link to a website where I can buy from.

I like this one a lot but they are out of stock.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not an expert on temper temperatures, but if you're going to repeatedly heat this knife in a flame, you might not want to get something "nice". Since you're planning on intentionally putting the steel in a tough situation, you may want to get something cheap.

Are you going to be heating the knife to work with dental wax? I've had to do this in microscopy and we always used an X-acto knife. The relatively long handle didn't heat up and the blades are disposable.

Yes - It will be used with wax along with other materials such as plaster, stone, impression materials, acrylics, and many others. I use one of those disposable scalpel blades sometimes for trimming wax and impression materials. I don’t want to spend too much money on one, I just want something I can use instead of the disposable ones they give us. Follow the link in my first post to get an idea of what I’m looking for.

Links not working but I know spyderco is coming out with a smaller version of the rescue in H1 called "saver salt". Edit: I think it will only be in SE though. oops

I can't get that link to work, but have you considered a stockman? This is a traditional slipjoint model that has a clip point blade, a spey point blade, and a sheepsfoot blade. Depending on which manufacuturer you go with, you can get different sizes. If you don't have a brick and morter knife shop you can go to to check one out, walmart carries the buck stockman.

My point about the disposable knives is that if you repeatedly heat the knife in a flame, you're probably going to ruin the temper. This will soften the steel and prevent it from holding and edge. If the knife is only used on wax, this isn't a big deal because the heat will do more of the cutting then the edge but if you plan on using this knife for other things as well, you're going to have issues. I suggested the stockman becuase it allows you to have 2 other blades in the same knife for other cutting chores.

Well, until you said that you wanted to be able to heat the blade and use it hot I was going to tell you that Victorinox makes two nearly identical models with a single sheepsfoot blade that are both economical and nice to use.

yea - i'm not really liking those stockman knives because they don’t seem like they would open easily and I would like something with a lock and a pocket clip but I guess I’ll check them out next time I have a chance. The cutting edge does not need to be super sharp because I will probably be trimming and scraping off stone or plaster – something I probably should’ve mentioned in my first post. Thanks for the replies so far!

So, just to be clear here... you're looking for a sheepsfoot blade, a pocket clip, and a lock. You also want a knife that can be opened with one hand. You're going to be scraping stone and plaster, so the knife won't be kept sharp. Based on the example you gave, you also would like to spend around $5. Does that sound about right?

yes exactly what u said and dont forget about it being heated with a flame sometimes. as for the price, i am willing to spend more than $5 if need be. price isnt that important as long as its reasonable for the quality.
