I was doing an unrelated web search, and happened upon an outfit that caters to the re-enactment set. Lots of interesting kit there, including some tomahawks. I noticed that some were described as 'cast' and others 'forged'. The cast ones were described as historic replicas, presumably cast in molds taken from the originals. The forged models were a little more generic. What puzzled me, though, was that the cast versions cost two to three times as much as the forged, when I would expect the forged to be both better quality and more difficult to make. Am I correct in this assumption? And, is the price difference perhaps a result of some 'licensing' fee by the owners of the historic pieces? What would be the real difference in quality and performance between a cast and a forged hawk? I don't recall the name of the site, but if I can find it again, I will post it here so you can see what I'm talking about.

Thank you in advance for your comments. :)

Forged generally gives a tougher and stronger steel, it depends on the heat treatment after the shaping as well. The cast ones could be more expensive because they are more detailed, or larger, or have different materials, etc. .

Ahh! I see. Did they happen to mention- imported from where? The prices were really good for some beaters, but I have an aversion to certain imports. :grumpy:

As I understand it, the forged ones are litterally quicky hand forged jobs from overseas that can split at the joint eventually, and the cast are quality steel castings made from good material. A mountain man buddy of mine always preferred his cast models for durability.

I have a cheap hawk that is supposed to be forged and if you look in the eye you can see a line of weld that runs up the eye and along the bit top and bottom this is then ground to try and hide the fact it's just folded and has INDIA stamped on the back they are quite thin in the blade and stick in very well when thrown but will split and open up eventually  ok I suppose for cheap sh*te but don't expect to much

I suppose it would stand to reason, then, that the cast versions would be more consistent from piece to piece for people who wanted a throwing "set". Interesting how it shakes out that the ones you'd want multiples of cost more.

Oh well, I've only started looking, and there are way more options out there than I would have thought.
