Someone must have the secret to fixing bladeplay in a benchmade.

I have a Griptilian senior that's brand new. It came out of the box with a nice quick deployment, but play in the blade. When I tightened it enough to get rid of the blade play, it is impossible to budge without two-handing.

I tightened it up little by little, too. It continued to have blade play until it was so tight it won't budge at all.

What's the deal? Is it because it's a bit bigger? I have two smaller benchmades (a mini-grip and a 707 sequel). Both are smooth opening and are mighty tight with no blade play. Rock solid.

This is the second full-size griptilian I've had with this issue. I took the other back to Bass pro shops and ordered the second one online.

I must win the SOL lottery with Benchmade. Pretty much every one I have, and every one I do own has been this way. Some worse than others to be sure. Some just perceptible. But every single one, with the exception of a CQC7 I had YEARS ago, is this way.

Never had a problem with any of my Axis lock Benchmades and I've had 10 or so.

Blade play with BM is what turned me off about them. Every other knife i got from them seemed to have blade play, and as the OP stated, you go to try and tighten it up, and then it's too tight to open..

Send it to Benchmade, they'll get it going right.
I agree. Send it in asking them to make it right. Benchmade is not a cheap brand, therefore their knives should be in proper shape when they are delivered. I'm sure they want to keep their reputation untarnished. ;)
I have played with a "lot" of Benchmade knives and never seen this phenomenon. This includes my #740 DeJaVoo. Comes out smooth with no play in the deployed blade.

I think there is a difference the way people test their blade play. If I hold the tip of the knife and the end of the handle, I can get a bit of blade play in every BM I ever owned. The big difference is if I tighten the blade play completely out, then the action is like peanut butter. I have come to accept a little blade play if I want a fast smooth Benchmade knife.

The sweet spot for an Axis lock is very small. Use loctite to keep it in that spot. A little FP-10 oil doesn't hurt either.

Horizontal or vertical play? How much? I can detect some amount of movement in every folder I have picked up with the exception of maybe two knives. They fold so some amount of movement is expected even if you can't see it visually and can only feel it. I have over 20 Benchmade knives and none have enough play to be bothered with. Definitely not enough to notice in use and I bet you can't notice it when using it either. Most play can only be felt with an OCD level of examination.

I have noticed some AXIS locks seem to have a small amount of play when new but as the lock is broke in and cycled a few dozen times it for the most part disappears.
