Hi,
I want to hear some criticism, drawbacks, shortcomings, etc of Emerson knives from those of you that own one. I have been thinking about getting one for a while now, but I just want to be sure since I'll be on a tight budget for the next while.

Thanks!

imho the only con is they are more SD oriented vs utility use, though they will work fine for utility too.

if ya want a custom emerson they run over $1000 up to ~$2K.

imho thats the only cons.

some folks say the CG is hard to sharpen, as long as ya can free hand sharpen a knife ya wont have problems, i never have. some say the CG doesnt cut well, again i say "rubbish". some say they are ground LH (the CG) this is my favorite line of BS, i have had RH ground CG's and they dont cut any better (or worse) than the LH grind, makes no diff. some folks say the EKI's have lock probs. 5-6 yrs ago, maybe, now? nah, no more than any one else.

thats really about it.

which one ya looking at??

i really like the CQC12 myself, and the '8 and the SOCFK, and the P-Tac.

The only con I can think of is the blade coating. I recently bought my first Emerson (CQC-8) and I had read that the "satin" blades are hard-chromed (coated) but I didn't really process it. When the knife arrived I was thrilled, and still am, but I've already managed to crap the blade coating up, after only a few days, cutting nothing more than a bunch of cardboard and plastic straps. I don't see any reason why a 154-CM blade HAS to be coated. I've carried 154-CM knives for years and never had any problems with corrosion. I wish my knife had a simple bead-blasted finish, rather than a coating.

Other than that, Emerson knives are great. I'm sure I'll end up buying more.

my only complaint is that the pivot screw needs to be tightened occasionally. my benchmade cqc7 never had this problem.

all my eki's require monitoring of the pivot screw. not necessarily a bad thing, just something to be aware of.

The only complaint I have is with my EDC Commander. The screws on the clip become loose. A quick tightening and we are good to go. Yes the post screw will loosen also but the same, a quick tightening.

Emerson Knives are great SD knives, if needed. My Commander has been excellent as an all around utility knife. I have been carrying my Commander for about 8 years now. Currently, I have 12 different Emerson models but I revert to carrying the Commander.

Talk you out of purchasing an Emerson for another would be a mistake IMO.

try a little loctite. works wonders on the clip screws, but may gum up the pivot screw.

I have a Mach 1 and a Commander that I have been carrying and generally beating the hell out of for about 6-7 years, both have performed extremely well. Early last year I added a Combat Kerambit and it to has proven itself to be an excellent folder. I have nothing but good to say about the EKI knives.
Just my two cents.
Wave

The only negatives I've experienced with owning Emersons is that all other makers knives seem flimsy in comparison and now I can't go back to anything else. BTW- don't get a 7, they are evil voodoo knives that will haunt you forever and never leave your pocket til you die. Seriously.

I have two EKI's and love them both.
The Combat Karambit and the CQC-10.

I had the pivot screw issue with the 10 but I added a touch of loctite and I've been waving it constantly for a week and no drama's.

Excellent SD knives and my 10 serves well as a utility.

Will be buying the La Griffe, PSARK, fixed Karambit, CQC-11, Commander and Mini Commander and maybe a Persian.

i love them so much I even bought the t-shirts

Thank so much for all your replies
I think I'll pick up a mini commander for now..but later maybe an -8 or a -7 :D
Does anyone here have any experience with the PSARK?

Thanks again!

This is my first post on Bladeforums. I recently joined in order to get some information on Emerson knives.

After wanting one for about 10 years, I finally got an Emerson CQC-7BW. I have not had it that long and have not had a chance to use it very much, but so far I have noticed that the pivot screw does need some adjustments from time to time. Other than that, it seems tough enough to live up to the reputation.

BTW, the wave is pretty cool....
