I plan to do a 'history lesson' on weehawks sometime when I get my other knvies back.. but I noticed somethign quite peculiar with BM45's.. the older the BM45 (in production date) the nearer the elastic band on the sheath is to tbe bottom.. the newer set of sheaths seem to move up (as on my sheath page)

I also noticedanother thing. The older the production the more inconsistent the grind is on the swedge. It makes it seem that the newer ones are machien ground and the older ones are hand ground??

and the kicker.. if you look at the side of the blade WIHTOT THE butterfly.. that is where it says benchmade, run your fingers on he unground steel. Is it smooth? r is it 'ribbed' like a cheese grater?

it seems that the older production of BM45's havea smooth finish on both sides, while the newer ones have a rough surface. Just horizontal lines from the npolished stel.. INteresting.

No, just changes in process.

Yes, the original sheaths had quite a bit of variability in them, especially the length of the flap. I've got some where the flap is almost as long as the sheath and the velcro barely makes. I think the sheath got better as time went on.

Yes, the blades where originally hand ground and then machine ground when that facility became available. But, again, what happened later is that they got more consistent.

So i take it that my guess is right as far as consistency and human inte3rvention? what about that thing where one side is ribbed for the newer models? DO you have a theory on that one?

One side is ribbed to enhance the sensation when you get cut.
