Something about the Vanguard.

I've only had a Vanguard for about 4 years or so. Since then I have used several differant brands and differant style knives. But I always go back to the Vanguard. I have had a 110 of some sort for about 22years. I have knives that are alot more expensive and knives that even in some cases cut better. But something about the Vanguard I just really like. I have to confess and I may get stoned for this for about a year I even got caught up thinking that Buck was second class. I got a little knife snobery. If I was to look at all my knives I would have to say that my Vanguard has probally seen the Most use. Its the AG version without any coating. I even spent a whole day "in" a lake with it this past summer with only a little surface rust that wiped off. While I will continue to use other knives also I want to say that Buck makes a heck of a product for a decent price. When I compare the prices of Bucks to the others in my possesion I ask myself, "what was I thinking"

Ah, another convert! Welcome kyhunt. You certainly won't get any argument here from anyone concerning the fact that Buck does indeed make one heck of a product for a very decent price, and there are many here who praise the Vanguard as well. Perhaps you need to consider selling all those other "snobbish" knives you own at inflated prices, and then buying yourself some more Bucks.!! ;)

Maybe. They are great knives also. But for the price differance I dont know if they are really woth it. They cost 2-3 times more than Buck And I have a tough time keeping them sharp. I may just end up cleaning them up and keeping them as lookers.

IF i were still hunting i would carry a vanguard to the stand or camp..
while a 110 will work for most every thing there are knives that are better at some things..
why i find i have a fancy dressed up one now ...
dont know why as i only collect 110's
as for price and service ..
well i have owned a buck since they were one liners..wow..
to think my first buck is a highly valued collectable now
LOL... then it was jest a good tool..

That summed it up - the Bucks are great tools. My woods stomper was a regular wood handled Vanguard. When I finally got the AG variant - with that S30V steel - I thought it was too pretty to be a user! Last fall, I got called to 'the dark side' - for bushcraft knife 'enlightenment'. Oops.

I bought five Bark Rivers - then a sixth one in the spring - great knives - love the convex grind. Expensive. Nice sheaths. Very well made. Tool steel. But... that Vanguard still gets more use! Oh, and another cheaper 420HC knife for 'bushcraft-lite' duties - ie, day hikes - a Gen5 005GYS. You betcha a 110 goes in my pocket, too, a lot. Great tools!

PS Another temptation - a friend has introduced me to Busse Combat knives. Not needing to field dress a Studebaker, much less having the requisite funding, they aint likely here.

naw... it is a Buck Knife for me..
not jest a fine knife but the best knife for the money...
if i find i need some thing like a busse looking knife ...
well there is always Dark Opp's at a better price..
not to offend but what i heard they at busse use is lawn mower blade steel
great for stress full use but dont try to have a thin shaving edge last..
jest find your self a old 124 .. i am sure you can field dress a stude with it!

Dont get me wrong I like Bark River, I own 6. But for the price differance the Buck is hard to beat. I go back and forth on which I like better. But for value and U.S made, Buck still is great. They are alot easier to sharpen for me and I can buy more for the money. I'm sure I will buy Bark River some more. But looking at what I paid for my last Bark river I could have easliy bout 2 or 3 nice Bucks.

The shape and size of the Vanguard blade makes it a fine knife. I have four and am trying to control myself on getting more.

Just a ? here as I just picked up a NIB Vangaurd w/ black rubber handle for a good friend and I know nothing about them as I am a Schradeaholic:D as I digress, the ? is How to date code these knives This one has a C in the tang stamp and BTW the knife is a very well balanced blade:thumbup: in drop point style and I am impressed with it ;)and believe it will be a very useful blade for a large game cleaner?

Thanks Shawn

The C is the stamp for 1995... Are you saying you found a NIB one laying around in a store somewhere???

me and my dad use our vanguards as our hunting knives id have to say there really good for the price

NO, bought on that famous auction site $41.50 shipped good or bad? :confused:I'm not sure but the new ones go for more and the price tag on the box that this one was in, 50 smacks and the friend thought it sounded like a good deal as he has been looking for awhile. Thanks for the date ID.

The 110 and the Vanguard are my two favorite Buck models. I wish I'd managed to snag a Vanguard Master Series in BG42. I did manage to save some pics:
