This is a very early mountaneering ice axe dating from the late 19th century to pre-WWI. Mountaneering had just started to take off as a sport/tourist activity late in the century and new fangled devices like this technical axe were replacing the traditional alpine walking stick. We can only wonder how many mountains this thing has conquered, or how many trips it has taken to Nepal. Unlike, later 20th century axes this one is 40 inches long and held together by hand wrought iron rivets.
