A few months ago I had a fellow contact me that is in the US Coast Guard, and he wanted me to build him a boat knife that he could use on the deck of a cutter boat on the Hudson River in New York. He gave me his materials request, size, and price range, and specified a black rawhide sheath that was right to left crossdraw. The rest he left up to me, and this is what I came up with.
The knife is 7 1/4"OAL, full tang stainless raindrop damascus forged by Chad Nichols, handle scales are black linen micarta that Michael Burch assisted with the waffle texture(he did most of it:D), lined with red fiber, stainless thong tube ,nickle silver pins, and a center mosaic pin, and a paracord lanyard with a pewter skull bead.
As mentioned the shaeth is veg-tan covered in black rawhide, and just for the hell of it I put black deerskin fringe and another skull bead at the tip of the sheath.

That is very different from your usual style, but very well done! I bet your customer is well pleased.

Thanks for letting us have a peek.

Very nice! I'm curious as to how that sheath will hold up in that environment.
I really like the skull bead attached to the rawhide sheath... at first they seemed so different but I find the pairing really appealing; nice touch

That is a most excellent knife!!! That is also very much MY kind of knife.

That's very nice John.
Are you considering offering some knives in more contemporary styles?

Came out great, John! I really like how the raindrop damascus and textured micarta compliment each other. The fancy pin and skull touches add just the right amount of zest to make this knife catch the eye. Although can't see the liners well, I'm sure they also add to the overall look.

Sheath is also really cool and would work well for my purposes but as others have said, wonder how it'll hold up in it's owners environment.

Great details make this knife practical and an eye catcher...I'm diggin' this package!!!

I LIKE that! Nice damascus and the handle material looks good with it. Mosaic pin and the little skull are nice details too.

Well done.

Peter

Thanks for the kind words everyone! The customer for this piece called me Sat. less than 5 minutes after he opened the package. He went on about how much he loved it and appreciated my efforts, so he was very pleased!
Kevin, while I love the frontier style and have no plans of not doing what I feel I do best, I have always been willing to go outside of the box and make whatever a customer my want if I feel it is within my capabilities to do so. As far as making something like this and offering it for sale on my own, perhaps I would occasionally, but lately everything I've been doing has been custom commissions, so there has'nt been time for much else!
As far as the sheath holding up to use on the boat, I see no problems at all. It's got three coats of varnish on it, so it is for the most part waterproof.
As someone who has worked on riverboats for 22 years, this package will see basiclly the same conditions under which I work, so that gives me firsthand knowledge on making something that will withstand the conditions:D

John, I'm new here and not aware of your usual style, that being said, I like the "Frontier" sheath and the cool utility knife! I like the whole package!

Cool stuff!

Steve
