Okay, for whatever reason I'm not getting much play but I'm so happy with the results on this simple BK-7 mod that I just had to broadcast it over to my RatPacker brothers.

Basically, I removed the plastic grips off the BK-7, used ranger bands to fix a fire kit on the tang. This included the following items: 2 pieces of fatwood about 3/16" thick. The little magnesium/ferro rod that comes with the Rat Izula kit, a small piece of hacksaw and two fire straws. The contents are covered with ranger bands and then the whole handle wrapped with paracord.

I'll ask you to scroll down to about post 9 where I re-did the wrapping. In this case I added more ranger band material and shaped the fatwood pieces to give better grip contours. Believe or not, the new wrapping is a more comfortable handle than the original. I love this this thing. The same could of course be done on an RC-blade with their removable handles. However, I like the handles too much for that.

The izula could be a nifty experiment here for somebody wanting a more robust handle.

So what do you guys think? Am I batty on this one? I'm not getting any feedback at Becker. W&SS is uncommonly slow tonight.

Apologies to the Mods if you think this is off topic and flogging an idea too much. I do have piece of RC-kit in there, but I realize it is off topic.

Cheers all!

Looks useful, and as long as you like it and find it useful I wouldn't worry too much about what other people have to say about it, thanks for tip

Thanks Hw....I don't usually worry about what people thing. However, this one struck me as a great evolution on the idea of the ranger band/PSK that we've been seeing so frequently. I'm just really psyched about this one. Kind of like the firesteel loop in the sheath. You've got a dedicated backup in your handle plus easy access to it.

I just might try something on the Izula. The simple requirement will be to cover over the center hollow of the handle using a full length ranger band. Then using that hollow to stow some good stuff in there. I need a to order a bunch of smaller ferro rods, probably from GoingGear.

Funny little note. I wasn't all that keen of sticking in my Rat-Cutlery mag/ferro bar in the Becker handle. I had a Doan stick and I kept hearing about folks saying how the little ferro rod pops off the doan stick. I tried prying it off with screw drivers. I tryied hammering that little ferro off with a hammer no go. I could not rip that little ferro rod off the doan stick. Probably have to heat it. Anyhow, the common complaint of the good old Doan sure wasn't happening to me!

I've heard this about other brands, but Doan was specifically mentioned as not having this problem. Just some more info, I guess ;)

Thanks,
