I wanted to share a few pics with you. Recently I had an order that pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was for a pancake sheath, black in color with carlos border stamping. The kicker, it was to have a metal Special Forces emblem attached. The knife was a one of a kind Steingass chute knife with white micarta handle. Now I've made thousands of pancake sheaths but I've never attached a metal emblem to one. So I called Paul (sheathmaker). We spoke for quite a while and tossed around different ideas. His main thought was to overlay the emblem on the outside. He felt inlaying it just wouldn't work well. So off I went. First problem There really wasn't room for the emblem and the carlos border stamp. Called my customer and he said do what ya need to do. In cowboy thats called "slipping the bridle and turning me loose". Cool, love it when a customer will do that. So went with just a regular border stamp. That gave me the room for the emblem. However when pushing it through the leather the pins broke!@#$$%%^^&*!!! Paul said they might. So I thought I'd try inlaying it and epoxying it to the lining. Well try cutting an accurate inlay window around that emblem. I tried and in the trash went that sheath. Fortunately I had two emblems to work with. I remade the sheath top. I used the pins on the emblem to mark the holes for the pin and instead of trying to push them through the leather used an awl to make the holes. Easy. bent the pins over and tapped them gently so they snugged into the leather and then lined the sheath and finished it. This is the only pancake I've ever lined.

So plan C worked. Phew. I was sweating it after breaking the pins and tossing plan B. This was part of a very large order including one of my knives:

There is another thread here about the whole order:

Thanks for looking and as always questions and comments are welcome.

Thanks guys!! I really appreciate it. Paul thanks for your help too!!

I love how you used the white thread on the Black sheath body
Total respect as usual , the volume of work you produce just blows my mind .

Ken

Thanks Ken. Ya know I was a little concerned about the white thread at first but having to go up on the lining like that for the construction of the sheath I think it was the right choice too. Thanks for the kind words. Yep I keep pretty busy.

Blacks turn out real good I really prefer contrast thread as this white on black leather. Beautiful work.

Great looking sheaths and belt Dave, very nice.

I love that, and appreciate the thoughts about it. I've been trying to come up with a plan for a sheath and knife build for my old First Sergeant for over a year. I can do all the carving I'd like but I wanted to incorporate jump wings and our regiment crest into it. The closest I got was this. Lol.

He wanted the sheath done with rivets made from .50 Cal or .762 casings too, had to stop it there.

I've never done a lined sheath and never planned to since I hand stitch but for that mean old bastard I may have to make an exception and try it. He's one heck of a guy.
