Something for the Hudson Bay fans.

Awesome pic, had to post it. (I don't use flickr so I don't know how to post a big version)
How do you like the L.L. Bean?

I like the LLBean a lot, it's a great splitter for its size/weight and a good chopper also. My work has required some long hours lately (framing contractor) but I've still managed to do a little winter camping this year and used the LLBean in conjunction with a large Silky saw for my campfire chores and they both worked great. I've been looking for another LLBean Hudson Bay head on the auction sites but you just don't see this particular pattern that often.

:hypnotysed: Those are niiiiiccccccce. Man I really want a Norlund more & more.

I'm a big Norlund fan and I'm getting ready to haft a couple of Norlund heads when I get a little spare time. My first hatchet/axe purchase was a Norlund hatchet I bought back in the 70's when I was running a trap line after school hours, still have the same hatchet and it's still in great shape. I have seven Norlund axes/heads and the ones I'm getting ready to haft are the ones Norlund referred to as their Cruiser Axe. The heads are just a little bit larger than a standard boys axe head but have a full size eye opening.

The big "problem" with Norlund is that their quality is causing them to fetch high prices on the auction sites. Even the hatchet heads are going for 45.00-60.00 if in good shape and I just lost out on a bid for a very nice Norlund cruiser weight head (double bit) that ended up selling for more than 130.00.

I'm not sure who made the axe heads but I'm told that LL Bean himself hired a Native American man that made the handles by hand because Bean really liked them. I don't know how you'de know if you got one but I guess they were thin and had a nice shape to them. Just sayin.

Does anyone know who made the LL Bean axes back in the day? Was it Snow & Nealley?
I'm pretty sure it was Snow & Nealley. I own 1 S&N but it's an early one that is different than the ones made later. More wedge shaped. I own a couple L.L.Bean Hudson Bays. They have the weight stamp 1 3/4 under the poll and that big iron wedge like S&N used. The heads are still more wedge shaped than a Collins or Norlund. I'm still looking to add a later Snow & Nealley HB non-China to my collection but they don't appear too often.
