WOW, I feel really weird saying what I did in the title to this since I am still VERY new to knife making.

But, all things aside, we had granite counter tops put in our house today and the guys that were doing the install were VERY nice to us...

They made a great piece for my smoker table out of the left overs, and then they let my bride use the diamond cutter to cut up some 4" x 12" pieces of granite that was left over.

She cut the 4x12 chunks for the knife makers that may need a flat surface to sand on. No, it's not really big, but it'll work for the average scale sanding etc...

Now, these may NOT be as flat as what you get in a granite slab made for scientific work, but from my perusal thus far they are pretty flat!

If you live in the DFW area and would like one, it's yours for the taking if you come get it.

If you can't come get it, you'll need to pay shipping... Not sure how that part works, I may need some coaching...

Here is a shot of the granite...

For the record, I'm posting this on 2 separate knife forums...

Let me know if you are interested...

Geeze I didn't realize people wanted these things, I find them quite regularly! I just gave a 14x24 piece away to a chef friend to use in the kitchen. I have a 24x32 piece in my own kitchen and a 12x24 piece in my shop. I will have to remember this next time I get some.

I'm very interested! Please e-mail me at: james(dot)terrio(at)yahoo(dot)com. If you let me know the weight of a piece and your zip code, I'll be glad to figure out the postage and pay for it.

Please do!

If you dive the dumpster at your local glass shop, you can find some useful ends too

- or do as Stacy does and actually talk to them...

One other way of acquiring these is to go to the local countertop showroom and if they have their own crew to do installs chances are they have the cutouts from sinks. I am a foreclosure contractor and find either old samples, tiles, or broken counter tops. My large one is a broken piece that is pretty square. I also have some nice 12" marble tiles which work well for flat sanding.

Makermook, Justintyme, and James, PM your address to me and I'll ship it. Gonna use the USPS anything ships plan... No shipping charges.

This takes care of all of the blocks. Hope they work for you guys!

Charlie, since I'm a cheap SOB without a proper membership yet, I can't pm you directly. Please contact me at the yahoo addy I posted above and I'll get right back to you. Sorry for the inconvenience :o

For those who want a cutout like this, I recommend visiting the local granite store. Granite shops have drops from sink cutouts laying around. I chatted with the place that did ours and was offered run of the scrap pile.

These ARE nice - sometimes there are small voids you might want to fill.

I like the surface fill-in and the height on a "real" granite block a bit better, so I'm using a block now.
